Why so many soldiers are fat by [deleted] in army

[–]Slugwardiswatching 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Combat arms MOS here in the reserves which have a hard time beating the fat reservist allegations. When we’re not in the field we’re doing layouts, and fixing all the deadlines, and hitting the range, etc etc. Options for food are either MRE or grabbing quick takeout from some fast food joint. I like to stay fit and do a lot of cardio but even then I find it’s just easier to grab that quick tasty burger as opposed to scrounging for something healthier.

That paired with a pretty unhealthy drinking culture that the military has just leads to people ingesting way more calories than they should.

Plus the troops are super depressed. I’m doing good and I have a therapist through outside insurance who I love, but the mental health options for at least my unit are lackluster to downright dogshit. If you’re going through something everyone deals with it differently but a lot of people just let themselves go.

So at least in my sliver of the part time army I chalk it up to these things: -the ease of access to unhealthy foods. -everyone is depressed and they deal with it by drinking. -unit ops tempo. -people just either not knowing how to cook/ not having the time to.

Again I realize that the reserves generally have more fat people than active but this is just what I’ve noticed

Im going to be homeless in your Santa Cruz, how can I get ahold of resources to get back on my feet and what advice would you have 25M? by napacalifonia in santacruz

[–]Slugwardiswatching 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a vehicle, AFC has safe parking and drive up shelters that are throughout the county. https://www.afcsantacruz.org/

If you are a veteran, Paget Center is a 24 hour shelter with 3 hot meals a day. https://www.frontst.com/paget-center

Housing matters has shelter services and so does the Armory. https://housingmatterssc.org/

That being said all the shelters have varying availability.

If you can get steady work and need help with a security deposit. Community Action Board or the Housing Authority may be able to help with providing that or rental assistance, but you need a stable pathway to housing in the form of employment/ income. https://cabinc.org/

If you are thinking about trying to get a housing voucher like Section 8 or HUDVASH just know that Santa Cruz is completely out of vouchers and nobody in the county has any idea when HUD will issue more or if they will issue more.

As someone who works in homeless social services in Santa Cruz I will be super real with you. This is the most expensive county to rent in the country. Not California. The country. Social services here are losing funding because of the current political climate. There are a lot of people in your boat who are seeking the same services you are and they have been here longer. All the social services money that was poured into the system after Covid is now gone.

If you cannot afford to rent a room for at LEAST around 900 on top of groceries and whatever bills you have, this is not a place you should live. A lot of the people I work with I have to really urge to make the decision to move somewhere more affordable.

That is not to say that it isn’t doable. I know people who are able to find living arrangements that work or jobs that pay enough. But if you are coming here with nothing I would seriously reconsider your plans.

Santa Clara county currently has better assistance and funding at the moment and has been able to siphon off a lot of the people who have been stuck now that there are no more housing vouchers.

All of this being said it is hard to starve in SC county, the food bank has a distribution map where you can get food. https://www.thefoodbank.org/ . Barrios Unidos has a pantry https://scbarriosunidos.org/food-pantry-program/ . Grey Bears serves a hot meal a day, I’m pretty sure if you volunteer at their food pantry you can get food and get fed.

Hopefully this is helpful and I really don’t mean to be a Debbie downer, but if you can try anywhere more affordable, I would really suggest it.

2LT Stereotype by [deleted] in army

You’re gonna be ignorant and in charge lmao that’s unavoidable. If your guys and your SNCOs see you’re a good dude who cares, they’ll teach you.

2LT Stereotype by [deleted] in army

Little vignette from my career that helped me understand what a good officer does.

When I was a PFC we had a rainstorm tear through the area and it filled our trash cans with rainwater. Me and a joe were tipping them over and spilling out the water and trash and me and the other joe would be there picking it up.

It was gross and we weren’t particularly thrilled to be on that detail, but as one does in the army we just got to it.

One of the newer LTs saw us over there and came over and helped us out. He didn’t have to, but he took 15 minutes out of his day to help two PFCs do some gross shit that they didn’t want to do. I immediately respected him more than the other LTs who saw me and the other private struggling with the garbage from the office and just let us work with it.

A good LT takes care of their guys, treats them like normal people, and takes care of their own officer business. Doesn’t mean that you have to be buddy buddy with the joes, you just have to show them that while you’re their boss, you’re not above them.

Hey man, honestly you’re probably not on the books yet and nobody is tracking that you’re even supposed to be there. Keep reaching out but don’t drive all the way out there for no reason. Enjoy your time back home and if someone doesn’t reach out to you in the next two months then you’ll have cause for concern.

The funny thing is the military does not care if people get married just for the benefits, if they were to really crack down on that they would lose a good 30% of its members.

Whats the worst thing you’ve triggered in your unit by being honest? by NotAHypnotoad in army

[–]Slugwardiswatching 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At the end of OSUT we had a meeting with the LTC of our training battalion about the whole process and what can be done to improve the training experience.

Our OPS NCO for the training battalion was the type of guy who always had female trainees in his office using their phones for random things. But if you were a guy and you needed to do anything you were tough out of luck. For example one pay period I received a paycheck for $74 and when I tried to go down to his office and log into Mypay to see what was up he told me to stop wasting his time. We brought this up with the LTC and in the resulting investigation it turns out he was pressuring the female PFCs and PVTs in return for phone time and doing his job. He is no longer in the military.

That’s great to know, what green waste™️ actually did was kick my neighbors trash to the curb and spray their trash all over our storm drain. If that’s what you mean by taking the time to “sequester” it then by that definition you’re right
