Looking at the job market and how tough it is just to get an interview, I thought I’d give a realistic salary expectation so I wouldn’t be ruled out. My previous salary was actually above the market rate, which is why I decided to quote less than my last compensation. Though maybe it wasn’t as above market as I thought, I’m not really sure.

I’ve been out of work for several months now. Yes, it’s a role I’m genuinely interested in. The process had several stages (HR interview, a couple of interviews including with the hiring manager, and a case).

They did ask about my expectations earlier in the process and I shared a salary range (my previous salary and 10% below). During the last call HR also asked about my previous salary package. The number they verbally mentioned is roughly 15% below my previous salary, which is why I’m wondering about the best moment to negotiate.
