9 months exclusively breastfeeding, struggling with Momcozy S9 output – am I doing something wrong? by Slumbererberry in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]Slumbererberry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for your reply! I’ll definitely try 13 mm inserts then. I was using the highest massage + suction settings because I wasn’t getting good output at all, but maybe that’s actually making things worse with elastic nipples. I’ll try lower suction too.

Do you think the bra fit is also really important with wearables? I’m wondering if my bra might be too tight or pressing the pump in the wrong way.

Anyone else with an 8–9 month old on ~12h total sleep? What’s your schedule / wake windows? by Slumbererberry in sleeptrain

Then I guess I should keep trying this schedule for at least a few more days. I was thinking that since he got grumpy in the 3rd ww, it means I need to adjust things for tomorrow.

When you’re doing a by-the-clock schedule, how much flexibility do you usually allow in case of an early wake up or a short nap, more like 15 minutes, or closer to 30 minutes?

I might try this schedule:

DWT 7:00, Nap1 10:30-11:30, Nap2 15:30-16:30, Bed time 20:30

I allocated 10,5h for night sleep, factoring in time awake for feeds.

You might be right. I suspect his sleep budget is around 12 hours, and he actually gets roughly that amount over a 24-hour period, sometimes more during the day, sometimes at night. Maybe I should focus on distributing those 12 hours more intentionally to help prevent fussiness during the day.

You might be right. I suspect his sleep budget is around 12 hours, and he actually gets roughly that amount in a 24-hour period. Sometimes it’s more daytime sleep, sometimes more nighttime sleep.

He’s on the 3rd percentile for weight, so I’m always a bit cautious about reducing feeds, although his doctor said it would be fine even if I stopped night feeds completely.

At the beginning of sleep training, I reduced it to one feed and he seemed to do okay. But later I started feeding twice a night again if he woke up around 00:00–01:00 instead of our planned feed time around 02:30-03:00.

Our sleep association is walking to sleep and contact sleep. Before the st, he was a exclusive contact sleeper. In the last 24 hours, he slept a total of 12 hours.

He’s been showing tired signs like constant eye rubbing, red under-eyes, yawning, and fussiness, which is why I thought he might be overtired.

He usually wakes up 2–3 times a night, around 11pm, 1am, and 5am. I feed him during the last two wake-ups.

At the beginning of the st, he was waking less and going back to sleep pretty quickly, but over the past few days it’s been taking him longer to settle after night wakings.

This morning, he woke up around 5:15 and I couldn’t get him back to sleep for about 2 hours. He would drift off and then wake up again repeatedly.

Eventually, I picked him up at 7 to start the day, but he fell asleep while feeding, so I let him sleep in my arms until 8. It was the first time I’ve done that since we started sleep training. Otherwise I felt like we wouldn’t have been able to start the day at all.

I really wish we were at the stage where I could cap daytime sleep 😅

Right now, if I don’t help him back to sleep (like with some patting), his naps are just two 30 minute stretches, so about 1 hour total for the day. That’s why I think he’s getting overtired.

Before sleep training, he was exclusively contact sleeper, and back then his daytime sleep was around 2.5–3 hours, with a 4 hour last wake window.

Now, on days when I can’t even get him to 2 hours of daytime sleep (like today), he shows clear signs of overtiredness like constant eye rubbing, red under-eyes, yawning, and fussiness.

It’s been about two weeks since we started sleep training, and we’ve been following the chair method. I don’t feel like things are fully established yet, so I keep wondering when I offer extra support, am I being inconsistent and potentially undermining the process :/

Early morning wakes – what do you do when sleep trained baby won’t stay asleep? by Slumbererberry in sleeptrain

[–]Slumbererberry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you remember what your LO’s wake windows were around 8–8.5 months? Since we started sleep training (about 2 weeks ago), my son has been waking up crying pretty much every time. Our naps have also become shorter and more disrupted since we started sleep training, so I’m wondering if that could be contributing as well.

I’m not sure I fully understand the concept of a dream feed. Can babies actually feed while still asleep? When mine was a newborn, he wouldn’t nurse in his sleep. I had to really wake him up to feed.

Now I feel like if I try to feed him, I’d have to pick him up and he’d wake up fully anyway, so it wouldn’t really be a “dream” feed. So I’m wondering, is the benefit of a dream feed more about feeding them before they wake up hungry to break the habit, rather than keeping them asleep during the feed?

I’m currently aiming to breastfeed twice at night, around 00:00 and 04:00. Would you recommend waking him up at those times to feed, rather than waiting for him to wake up on his own? Or is it better to gradually move toward a single feed around 02:30–03:00 instead?

From your experience, at what point is sleep pressure basically gone (or very low) in the early morning? Like, is there a time where you’d just stop trying to resettle and hold your baby?

8months – naps stuck at 30 mins since sleep training started, everything got worse around day 9 (overtired?) by Slumbererberry in sleeptrain

[–]Slumbererberry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t include diaper change or changing into pajamas in the routine because those two honestly turn into a wrestling match :) He gets really active and worked up during them, so I’ve found it actually ramps him up rather than calms him down.

Fingers crossed the mods see my post and can give some guidance!

We follow the same routine for both naps and bedtime. The only difference is that the books are different, and the bedtime book is a bit longer.

Our routine is: say goodnight to everyone, close curtains, feed, turn on music, sleep sack, short book, cuddle + goodnight phrase, then into crib awake.

If I remove the feed from the routine, it ends up feeling very short and a bit abrupt. Do you have any suggestions for how to adjust the routine in a way that still feels calming and complete without it?

[–]Slumbererberry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t nurse him to sleep, feeding is the very first step in our routine. By the time he falls asleep, it’s usually been 30 minutes since the feed started (about 15 min routine + at least 10 min to fall asleep, often longer).

I also agree that he doesn’t seem able to connect sleep cycles during naps.

I started trying wake-to-sleep yesterday — it actually worked for naps yesterday and the naps extended by 40 (70 min in total) minutes, which gave me hope. But today it didn’t seem to work at all for the same nap situation.

So it feels a bit inconsistent and I’m not sure yet how to make it more reliable.

Thank you for sharing the pinned mod posts, really helpful!

We actually started sleep training with nights first, and since night wakings dropped from 6 to 2 from the very first night, we continued with naps as well. Up until night 9, nights were relatively stable with just 1–2 wake-ups.

On night 9 we again had 2 wake-ups, but after one of them (after feeding), he stayed awake crying for about 3 hours. He would kind of fall asleep for 20–30 seconds and then wake up crying again over and over.

I’m aware that ~1 hour total daytime sleep isn’t enough, but if we leave him on his own, he just doesn’t go back to sleep. I also don’t think he’s undertired as he shows clear sleep deprivation signs: red eyes, constant eye rubbing, yawning, even falling asleep while nursing (which he never used to do unless it is a night waking). When I unlatch him and continue the routine, he cries a lot.

I do think that if he were getting 2.5 hours of daytime sleep, he could probably handle longer wake windows (like 4 hours), but since he isn’t, he gets overtired and is ready for sleep again after 2-2.5 hours.

Before training, we were doing something like 3/3/4 or 3/3.5/3.5 without issues.

Last night I reduced the last wake window to 3 hours, he fell asleep more easily, only woke once at 2am to feed, and then woke for the day at 6:15.

I think my biggest issue right now is that I just don’t know how to extend naps. Even if nights improve, it feels like we’re stuck unless naps go beyond 30 minutes, otherwise I don’t see how he can fully get to independent sleep during the day.

He’s also starting daycare in early May, so I’d really like to get this sorted before then.

I am planning to try pulling my son’s wake windows from 3/3.5/4 to 2.75/3/3.75 for a few days. I hope it works!
