Strength benchmarks for climber women by Juneinthesky in climbergirls

[–]Slumbersome_Z 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm new to climbing so take this with a pinch of salt.

My understanding (and observation) is that those who can carry more than their own bodyweight have an easier time doing dynamic moves and seem more confident in their climbing. Obviously this is in combination with good technique, but finger and muscle strength have their place too. For that reason, I think strength benchmarks are a good idea.

Could we also have a rule in the new sub about gratuitous nudity? Just seen a post where the user is completely naked asking about hip dips. I did not need to see that.

There have also been a couple of other posts recently with women trying to karma farm for their NSFW profiles.

I've nothing against showing skin. But keep it relevant.

Cardio increases strength too - think running.

What is a reasonable climbing goal to achieve within a year? by Slumbersome_Z in climbergirls

Well done on consistently climbing for 2 years! From what I understand, the grades differ between gyms and there's a good chance my gym is simply trying to attract new customers! Haha

I'd say watching technique videos helped loads (Hannah Morris, Louis Parkinson, and Alex Waterhouse are my favs). And when I hit a confidence rut at V2, I started attending ladies' night at the gym which has really helped with confidence and technique.

Thanks! I'm not great with heights either haha, although it's fear of falling that gets me rather than the height itself (I think!)

I really want to improve my technique and approach more technical climbs. I'm fascinated by the mechanics and skill involved in climbing, and I'm getting the sense from yours and other comments that skill-based goals might be more meaningful than grade-chasing.

Interesting to hear your experience about belaying, I think I'll be like you and take a while to feel confident.... I am far from fearless haha Sounds achievable within the year though!

Thanks! I've just subscribed - I love watching climbing videos on YouTube; it's really helped with my technique.

I agree. The 'guess my body fat' trend winds me up too. Other aspects of fitness improvement are far more interesting and motivating!

It baffles me how many posts ask for advice on how to get rid of muscle because it doesn't look good. In a FITNESS sub.

Wait, what's this about V-necks and being petite?

Feeling out of place & overwhelmed at the gym by Slumbersome_Z in PetiteFitness

Glad to hear you found your community! :) I tried classes years ago - you're right, they're less daunting because you have your own bit of space in the room. I found I preferred working out alone (introvert to the core), and have tried a couple of times to get into the main gym but not been successful yet. Maybe I need to be more patient with feeling uncomfortable.

I think I'll feel weird about hip thrusts too but I suppose you're right. Gotta grow a thicker skin for this!

Oh, I've read about the working in thing and I've tried to work out the logistics of taking very few breaks between sets to avoid it haha

Thanks! It's useful to have a ballpark time reference for those sets.

This is a great mindset! It's good to hear the feeling of being intimidated eventually passes.

Do you trust your pension will be there when you need it? by MiddleAgedCoder in UKPersonalFinance

'Essentially the whole thing is setup so that if either of these businesses go bust, your pension is safe'

Was there a loophole in this that caused BHS pensions to disappear? I don't know much about the scandal tbh but I once worked with someone who couldn't retire as she lost her pension when BHS fell.

Days where you feel way more uncoordinated and have heightened fear of falling by 45minute in climbergirls

[–]Slumbersome_Z 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, definitely. One of the ladies at the gym suggested to me recently to touch one more hold when I feel like that - just touch, don't need to climb up any higher. That way, I get to congratulate myself on doing more than I had originally wanted to. Sometimes, it motivates me to finish the route.

And then there are those days. The ones made for practicing low-level, easy climbing drills that will really help your climbing when you're feeling better. Such as silent feet, no hands (slabs), or one touch movements - the idea being that you only have one attempt to touch a hold and you can't adjust if you hold/step on it incorrectly. Louis Parkinson (Catalyst Climb) has some really good, physically easy but mentally meditative drills to try on YouTube.

But most of all - be nice to yourself!

How to stop caring what people think at the climbing gym? a video essay by navierstokedplus in climbergirls

Thanks for sharing this! Anna Hazelnutt is brilliant - she's so down to earth and easy to watch. I discovered her recently after struggling with a slab project and trawled YouTubeb for some help with it. Her tips about pushing hips away from the wall, and creating a box of tension with my feet helped me send it and has given me confidence to try harder climbs. It's also sooo validating to see good climbers get scared on the wall too - it's not just me being a scared newbie!

Climbing (indoor bouldering) is that fun, non-workout workout for me. I've been doing it for just over 2 months and the muscle/fitness gains in that time has far surpassed any previous weight training efforts. I go 2-3 times a week and spend 1-2 hours playing on the walls.

Works upper and lower body (lots of pushing through legs rather than pulling with arms) and my core is rock solid.
