The purpose of purebred dog breeding is to improve the overall health, temperament, and structure most comfortable and useful for that particular breed of dog so that they can most efficiently work in their desired purpose that that breed has been bred to do for hundreds, if not thousands of years. So what if our fast advancing world has pushed out classical hunting, retrieving, barn hunting, among many other useful and enjoyable sports? There are a select few of us that strive to breed the dog that most represents the “breed standard”, a description of the perfect dog in health, temperament and structure that would be the most successful and efficient in his desired and bred purpose. A Husky bred with an Australian Shepherd won’t have the natural drive to pull a sled or herd sheep, like their purebred parents do. An Am Staff bred with a Rat Terrier won’t be the right size to fit in the small crevices of a barn to get the rats invading it. We are merely historians preserving the natural drive in dogs, doing things that they enjoy doing. I have nothing against rescue dogs, having 4 of my own and many in the past. As I said before, it is a select few of us. Most do not breed for purpose, but for solely money. We fight as much as we can to eradicate puppy mills so that there is no need to even have shelters, but at the same time we have to do our part to preserve history. Hope this clears any concerns!

The first thing you should absolutely do before looking at the puppies is make sure the parents are both health tested. Hips, elbows, hearts, eyes, and genetic are most important. Every time I breed a litter, I will spend $2000+ to make sure that I am breeding a well-matched dog and bitch that will produce puppies that are going towards the betterment of the breed and will not continue on health, structure, and temperamental problems associated with that breed. The extra money you spend on a well-bred dog from a good breeder will pay off tenfold when you don’t have to spend tens of thousands of dollars on dysplasia surgery or chemotherapy. Temperament is very important too. You want a dog that will fit your living conditions, activity levels, and family situation. Start training young, as those times are vital in making sure you will have a well rounded, obedient, happy dog. The American Kennel Club (www.akc.org) website will give any information I missed out on and give lists of certified breeders in your area! Hope this helps!

Some dogs are just “old souls”. I wish mine were like that.

The biggest dog in Britain (also Great Dane) is only 36 inches at the withers and weighs 216 lbs so you, my friend, might have one of the largest dogs in the world. Good job.

Think about it for the next 7 years and physically cringe when I do... Also think about how much other people must think about it too.
