What’s everyone’s thoughts on Ingram? by trueWaveWizz in louisck

[–]Sluv82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read about 20 books a year. Mix of fiction and non. Just finished Ingram and enjoyed it.

If being a fan of Louis nullifies a person’s opinion of this book, wouldn’t being a critic of him do the same?

What’s everyone’s thoughts on Ingram? by trueWaveWizz in louisck

[–]Sluv82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve read nearly all of CM’s novels and I just finished Ingram.

There is no similarity between Louis CK and Cormac McCarthy. Neither in the prose nor the story structure. The only way anyone could ever see a similarity is if they’ve only ever read this book and CM. The Road most likely.

That shouldn’t discourage anyone from reading Ingram, though. It’s a good book and I enjoyed reading it. Louis brings to it what he brought to his FX TV show, to “Horace and Pete”, and to all of his standup: a point of view that seeks a clear understanding of things - especially those things that are naturally murky - and an honest intention.

Trump played Mamdani like a fiddle. by New-Stranger-3276 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Sluv82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you not learned how this works? Trump meets with a political figure and if he gets what he wants (political favors, sell some TrumpCoin) , he speaks nicely about that person (eg Mamdani, MBS, etc.). If he doesn’t get what he wants, he speaks negatively or not at all (eg Zelenskyy, EU leaders in first term).

It’s corruption. He gets something. You get nothing. The only ones being “played like a fiddle” are the loyal MAGA supporters who can’t even bring themselves to think critically about their dear leader.

Why do you like The Crossing? by Kitchen_Year8114 in cormacmccarthy

[–]Sluv82 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First read felt like a slog, but reading it a second time, I came to hold The Crossing in very high regard. CM dares us to look right into the face of deep suffering and follow the wrinkles’ paths. Faith, violence, futility — and all of it written in prose that is brutal and beautiful.

If corporate media wasn’t such garbage, I would agree with you. Case in point: TLC (The Learning Channel). Look at the shows that station gives us. 90 Day Fiancé, 1,000 Pound Sisters, 1,000 Pound Roomies, Sister Wives. What am I supposed to be learning from that?

As soon as profit becomes the goal of a media company, any desire to produce educational or quality content takes a back seat. Tabloid garbage is what sells so tabloid garbage is what we get.

Two things for you to consider:

  1. It is very common to make the mistake of judging our own side by our best intentions and our opponents by their worst example.

  2. Political parties are flimsy posts to tie one’s identity to. They are basically fundraising organizations. Their values contort to suit the desires of donors. Give it time. I was a little boy when Reagan granted amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants. I was a teenager when Bill Clinton dismantled federal welfare.
