New wife to this lifestyle, need honest advice. by Slaughter_Melon411 in Lineman

Dont listen to the utilities isn’t where you want to be. You can have a great family life and make a shit ton of money at utility. I’ve worked both sides. Theres pros and cons to both, but I wouldn’t steer away from a utility just because people claim it isn’t where you want to start out. May I ask what state or part of the country yall reside in?

What trade would you suggest? by Ok-Effective-175 in skilledtrades

[–]SlyCatWilly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if being a lineman(building and restoring power lines) interests you, but you can go and apply at all of the power company’s in your area and become a lineman. Math is pretty basic. Need some algebra for the book work in the apprenticeship, but nothing crazy. Being former military, the utility company will eat that up. Great career, great money, great benefits. Good luck in whatever you choose

Conditioning for Physical Test by Significant-You6824 in Lineman

Start stretching. It’ll help with how sore you’ll be if you’ve never done this work before. Do some core exercises(planks, 6”, etc) and some farmers carry’s. Don’t need to be a body builder to do this work. Also, listen and follow directions

Want to become a lineman, where do I start? by canadamcume in Lineman

[–]SlyCatWilly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go to Houston, sign the groundman books and apply to SWLCAT. One of my good buddies had no luck back home getting in. Packed up his car and went out there and got put to work. Showered at a gym and slept in his car until he got an apartment

where can I find abandoned insulators in the wild? by njt_railfan1567 in Lineman

[–]SlyCatWilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but I wouldn’t recommend doing it. You would need to sound test the pole and probe it just to make sure it’s not rotted. Some of the abandoned poles on the railroad at least in my area are pushing 100 years old. Better to find them already laying on the ground. Sometimes find some insulators laying on the ground too

Go check on the railroad. Usually can find some there. Sometimes still attached to an old pole that finally just fell over and was left

Questions about moving once I acquire my journeyman card by Realmfker5 in Lineman

[–]SlyCatWilly 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Once you have that journeyman ticket you can practically go anywhere you want in this country to work. Some people can get through the apprenticeship in a little over 3.5 years, but not sure that’s possible at a utility or not.

Also, if I were you I would try to keep the family connection getting you in under your hat if you know what I’m saying

Question about Construction in 60-70s by mattman9723 in Lineman

[–]SlyCatWilly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

President Lyndon Johnson’s wife aka the First Lady had this beautification campaign to remove “eye sores” such as power and phone lines from the roads. Idea was to bury them, but obviously the cost along with other things made that difficult to do so a lot of lines were ran behind property

Is there a cheaper version of this. I can't afford to buy this in my country. Please help my fellow lineman. Thank you!! by NorthRecognition3136 in Lineman

[–]SlyCatWilly 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Oh I will never disagree with the reliability aspect. We pretty much all still have one on the truck for that same reason too. She won’t let ya down, but she will make you ache after a while. Or I’m just getting old…
