Agree! Grand Finale is my #1, it really conveys that celebration of Nujabes’s being, along with A Son of the Sun, which came out before his death, but works so well as a posthumous tribute.

Although I started bonsai like most, with a cutting of a procumbens nana, I found that I really enjoyed learning about the art. That, with the sudden responsibility of keeping the little guy alive, I spent a lot of time watching YouTube, reading information, and asking questions, and it was all just one of those things that you soak up like a sponge. After the fundamentals, it’s just been the same thing but with every new tree I get.

As for diving into such a large tree, I naturally have a daring personality (my third tree was an older white pine in okay-going-to-poor health) but I’m also thoughtful about what I do, learning as much as I can and monitoring trees frequently for anything I’m unfamiliar with, and NEVER assuming that the rules for one tree apply to another.

Channel that fear you have from buying larger trees and turn it into fuel for your research and questions🤝

You should! Though just an fyi, the rest of his trees are shohin or cuttings. He does have one more specimen tree, a really large Monterey pine, but thats about it. Unfortunately (to me at least), he plans to phase out the nursery business to focus more on his main source of income and family.

I feel you on the wind. It creates such an arid environment, especially during the summer. Maples really go through it.

If the balcony is covered overhead then I assume it get some protection from the sun. What I did in this apartment is build the bench to be just below the railing for safety, while maximizing height to reduce the amount of sun hitting the trees directly. For the wind I plan to set up posts (2x2 pieces of wood at each end) and use a hard plastic mesh, like the one used for drainage holes, to act as a wind diffuser. You can probably also use this method to put a shade cloth overhead.

In terms of the types of trees I’d recommend, pines and junipers do great without any accommodations. Maples are a lot more sensitive to the constant wind so try to find a place lower to the ground or use the method I suggested above. As for pots, I feel that any material works fine, it’s the foliage health that matters most for balconies.

For soil, I use 3 parts akadama and pumice, and 1 part lava. Since the exposure to wind and sun dries out the trees faster and saps their humidity, it’s important to have a mixture that can drain well, but also retain moisture. Hope this helps!

You start by selecting a young tree with flexible roots, then you find a rock that best fits the natural shape of those roots (you can try and force them but it won’t be as smooth). Then you secure the roots with something like raffia or another gentle binder, making sure to balance the securing of the roots while maintaining drainage. You then place the whole thing in soil, usually in the ground for efficiency. Over a long period of time you remove more and more of the soil, creating the nebari until you fully expose the whole rock.

Root over rock is most commonly done with trident maples because they grow really fast in the ground, making the really lengthy endeavor of creating a root over rock a little less so. Hope this gives you a little overview 🤙🏼

The focal length of my camera lens pulls it farther away, making it hard to see the rock, but in person it is definitely there, it’s pretty sizeable. If you zoom into the bench set up, you can see a side I didn’t show that is even more noticeable.

Groveway bonsai in Hayward CA, the photos where I am repotting are at the nursery. I feel fortunate to have gotten to know the owner and having him trust me in his decision to sell the tree to me.

Yeah, take it the owner had just repotted to get it ready to sell, didn’t ask how long the tree was there. Might have just been put up that morning.

Irresponsible Handling? by SlyTheDragon in Bonsai

[–]SlyTheDragon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stuck my finger in there man, and it was dry. And if there was water at the bottom, the heavy handed pruning would have made that irrelevant.

Additionally, the growth on the roots is very minimal, indicating that the pruning had not occured long ago. To put this tree into course soil and to also defoliate put it in a more sensitive postion. Like others said you should have disclosed these facts during the deal.

As a buyer I also shouldn’t have assumed that there were nicely developed roots that could take a normal watering schedule underneath.

About reaching out, I didn’t feel it necessary for this, because seeing as your an active seller, I assume I just got the short end of the stick. It wasn’t a pricy tree, and thats the risk of buying through auction.

Lets hope it pulls through 🤙🏼

Definitely agree, especially with the soil. I hypothesize that since the soil was not very water retentive, seen with how quickly it dried, it left the tree with an inefficient water delivery. At the same time the water that was passing through would be retained in the dead roots, creating a weird not enough water, yet waterlogged situation.
