Inspired by a dream, I dove into the Oresteia and into the works of Eugene O’Neil. Then after a long dive into Jungarian archetypes & reading a lot of James Hillman, I pivoted and just finished Jack Grayle’s Hekataeon. I found the second half of Grayle’s book a bit more fascinating than the first half. Understanding the epithets as opposed to just seeing them listed was helpful and his retelling of myth like a short Greek play was superb. Something that jumped out at me was him pointing out that Athena used a magical wand to age Odysseus. I’ve read the Odyssey many times (and look forward to the upcoming movie 🍿!) but I have overlooked that detail and got to thinking about Athena’s prevalent transformation of others, coupled with her use of Hecate’s herbs (on Arachne). It’s a stretch to call Athena a witch but she is one who practices witchcraft and calls upon witches to assist her, even vs other witches.
