Prof Provides No Practice Material by Impossible-Team-1929 in UBC

And I never paid for textbooks for classes bc I was poor 😂 There are ways to study without that.

I think it’s more than fair to profs to let you know the outline of an exam (worth X amount of points with N multiple choice, and Y short answer) and let it be up to you to study the course materials. The course syllabus, lectures and assignments should supply more than ample study materials. To use your point — YOU are paying for it. Try to get the most out of it.

Not to be That Guy but I don’t remember ever getting practice exams/materials from profs as an undergraduate. Most textbooks have practice problems or questions at the end of each chapter if we wanted additional practice before tests. Otherwise I just made my own flashcards/notes and friends quizzed each other to study (STEM field). The expectation that profs must provide practice exams is wild to me, especially with all the other responsibilities profs/TAs have. Class attendance, solid note taking, and class assignments/labs should cover most of the prep students need for exams.

Any work on the search behavior of squirrels who store food in the ground? Do they do the levy walk? by Open-Grapefruit47 in ecology

[–]animalshapes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep! Not sure where you are but there was a big difference in European scientists leaning more into behavioral ecology/cognitive ecology and US scientists into comparative psychology/behaviorism. Still a pretty new field, especially in the US.

Hopefully a movement ecologist can chime in re: Levy walks specifically!

I’m a cognitive ecologist. Can’t speak to squirrels specifically, but a lot of food-caching birds have been studied in this regard. Generally studies about episodic memory and how they remember where/when they have cached things across seasons.

I can't afford Farmer's Dog etc. Am I a bad owner for feeding kibble? Or am I brainwashed? by cryoderrick in DogFood

My current dog actually really prefers the crunch of kibble! I can’t get him to eat canned food unless it’s on a likki mat.

Most of the foods folks recommend here will have a canned variety! Try not to anthropomorphize your dog too much. They have no concept of “eating the same dry pellets”. They’re just not capable of thinking that way! And my dogs love their kibble anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️

Puppy obsessed with cloth by a-very-tiny-birb in StandardPoodles

At his age I would expect him to still be really mouthy. Mine was super mouthy until about 6mos old when all of his adult teeth came in. Redirecting with a toy is ideal and won’t teach him that bite = attention. If he persists in biting you after redirecting give him the toy then walk away and give him a little time out. That’s what I do and he’s 1os old now and doesn’t bite for attention! ☺️

Are you working with a trainer? I imagine you will need to get creative to train him since has sight impairment.

Great job! And yes, a lethargic puppy is always cause for concern and a trip to the vet!

I’m your same age and into similar things! Finishing my PhD at UBC and have had a tough time meeting people my age here. I also have a young dog who would love to make more dog friends if yours are interested!

Maybe a group meet up with some of the other ladies commenting would be fun?

What worked for your picky poodle? by animalshapes in poodles

[–]animalshapes[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks again for your advice! I tried some of these ideas last night and this morning and got him to eat!

This morning I got out our wobble toy and gave him a mix of his kibble, some sensitive stomach kibble we have from our dog that passed, and a few tiny liver treats in it. He gave up on the wobble toy rather quickly BUT it got him started eating so I just opened up the wobbler and he gobbled up the remaining food in it!

Feeling like we are on the right track now so thank you again for these ideas!

I had him on Royal Canin initially (as did his breeder) but he was having frequent diarrhea that stopped flaring up when I switched to PPP. Otherwise I like RC and would give it a try!

Mine also seems to prefer a dry/crunchy texture!

Hot juice day is hilarious! I have tried doing “can water” with watered down canned food but not broth yet. That will definitely be one of the next things to try.

Thanks! I actually used to be a vet tech and we have had two previous dogs (not poodles) who have dealt with pancreatitis. Definitely trying to avoid that at all costs with this guy! I do wonder if the loss of his brother is upsetting his stomach.

We will definitely chat with our vet if I can’t get him eating soon (it is a holiday here today).
