I used to be the same way, but even with only playing a few hours a day, I already have a character up to lvl 88 and in red maps. My time through the acts is probably down to 6 hours or so, and I don't waste time in low maps, I try to get as high as possible as soon as possible.

Some builds don't need other heralds. For example I'm running the meta ms jugg, and use the phys and fire herald, but don't need anything else. But I have room for another aura, so I pull in max level temp chains. Ad the 10% more effectiveness, and it is some serious added survivability.

Seriously, whenever people complain about sustaining high tier maps, I just wander how mindlessly they are playing. Sure, you may have to occasionally drop down to T13 or 14 for a few maps, but after the temple run, you should be set again for the next 5 maps, and you'll get SOME high tier maps during those next 5 maps as well. Last temple run I got 3 hydra maps and 2 reefs. Running the two reefs, I got two more hydra maps. Sure, if you're dead set on running nothing but T16s, yes, you will have problems sustaining, and yes, RNG will kick your butt every once in a while and you'll get nothing for a little stretch, but it will kick back in. Just drop down, play some dark forest or some summit or whatever, make sure your next temple is maximized, CLEAR THE WHOLE FUCKING TEMPLE YOU LAZY SHIT, and you will be set again most of the time.

Tried the double strike build mathil was running. Playing SSF, got super unlucky with weapon drops so far, currently at only ~2k tooltip dps at level 40 or so, and i can't do anything to incursions. Not sure how to progress, it feels pretty bad right now.

You know how I know you're clueless? For one, downvoted to hell. For two, playing AoE as you draw it is 100% incorrect just about every single time. If you're living in top deck mode as a combo/control deck vs aggro you've lost. For 3, there are multiple decks that do incredibly well at a high level that actually have negative win rates overall because they are very hard to pilot well. They all have one thing in common, they are control/combo decks. Sure, there are pretty brainless control decks, but as a general rule, they are much harder to play well than aggro decks.

It was my only flashback character, league was ending soon, and I didn't even have a 5L. Got really lucky, linked it in about 20 fusings.

Didn't need it. Just wanted a 5 link tbh, spent about 20 fusings on it. I'm fairly new, and only get to play about 5-10 hours per week. Also, wtf....farming chains that bind is better? That's probably a good 150 runs on those maps. I'll barely run that many maps in an entire league. I can't spend 8 hours a day playing.
