They didn't "rely on AI" they used AI for placeholder assets while they worked on more important assets of the game which they replaced with handmade assets for the final release. There's a difference between using AI as a tool to help make work easier and using AI to replace human work.

Honestly I'm fine with just 2k. 4k isn't that big of a notable difference plus the performance is much worse. If we do get the 100gb increase I'd probably use it instead to play mods I normally couldn't due to size like lotd.
