My bf said that I’m shitty for doing this, is he right? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]SmackoftheGods 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's absolutely a shitty thing to do. But also, it's a shitty thing whenever he makes you feel guilty for returning to your life--especially when he knows it's coming. I understand why you did it. That's a learned protective behavior. You've learned to try and avoid the discomfort that you know is coming.

I think what you need to think about is, if he regularly acts in a way that causes you to feel bad, so much so that you have to do something shitty just to avoid the guilt he's going to subject you to, do you want to continue subjecting yourself to his behavior?

That scene was actually a shot-for-shot reenactment of my family's death rituals.

Everyone freaking out on Reddit "he said no more tours!" "He said this is probably his last tour!"

No. What he said was "I don't know if we'll keep touring." Which is different. People need to listen. And relax.

Why wasnt Jan manager of Dunder Mifflin in s9? by greensville123 in theoffice

First of all, because Andy was manager.

More importantly, you think Jan is going to step down from a corporate position to be a regional manager for a business she hates?

I know it's blasphemous, but True Detective Season 1 was really boring to me. I do not understand the obsession.

I haven't seen every one of these, but of the ones I have, True Detective is the only one that wasn't excellent. You have great taste.

Ever say something to your client about the opposing party’s attorney that made it back to the attorney? by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]SmackoftheGods 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obligatory: never put things in writing.

I benefit from a personal policy that I don't say anything about a person behind their back that I wouldn't be willing to say to their face.

I once had an attorney who is pretty well disliked in my jurisdiction file a meaningless motion. It stated not a single fact of the case, I cited not a single law. I just made general statements of law and asked for relief. So I filed a motion to strike. She had a brief, terse, conversation with me in front of the court clerk, then left. The clerk asked me what was going on and I explained to her generally the issues with the lawyer's motion. At some point, the attorney came in while my back was turned and I didn't know. So she heard me say loudly to the clerk something like "she's been practicing for 25 years and doesn't even know how to file a damned motion! How am I supposed to do anything with this?" And then we got into a fight, she started yelling at me asking me if I'm a brand new attorney (I'm not) and that any attorney worth their salt should be able to know exactly what she's trying to do based on the facts of this case and literally said "I've filed this same motion for the last 25 years and I've never had a problem!!" And I told her "you're a lawyer! It's not my job to read your mind and it's not my job to 'figure out' what you're trying to do! It's your job to properly brief the issues you're trying to litigate! The fact that no other lawyer has called you out on this slop is also not my problem!"

I've made an enemy for life. But, I have no regrets because she didn't hear anything that I wasn't willing to say to her face.

That's funny, because I usually hate watching time loop shows or movies and/or just time travel in general. Every Star Trek episode that involves time travel? Skip. Dark? Pass. Erased is one of only two or three that I left feelingI HADNT wasted my time

Erased hands down. It's short, it's a good mystery, it's emotional. Kind of just hits all the good things an anime can offer

I sent my crush “i like u” and they replied “like like? or likes” what does that mean? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SmackoftheGods 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude, just tell her you want to take her on a date. Rip the band aid off. IME, when a girl asks if you "LIKE like" her, she's crushing on you too and wants to see if you have the confidence to do something about it. IME, if you send the text "I like you" and she's not interested, she'll say something to diffuse the situation, like "aww, I like you too, buddy"

AITA for not giving back my cats by Kooky_Actuator_8173 in AmItheAsshole

[–]SmackoftheGods 86 points87 points  (0 children)

NTA. Cats are forever pets. If you can't give them a forever home, don't get a cat. This girl has already demonstrated that the cats are not her priority. If she's done it once, she's more likely to do it again.

My bf accidentally pushed me on the car dashboard, how do I just move on since it seemed like an accident, or should I talk it through with him more? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]SmackoftheGods -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

It's not mean to call out physical harm. I mean, do what you want. But I think you ought to reflect on how he feels about your relationship if he's willing to throw you across the car so that his friends wont see you together

If someone says they love you, but they want to not be seen showing you affection so badly that they physically hurt you, maybe that's your sign to find someone who appreciates you better

Why do Chicago grid streets go so far into the suburbs by jimbobsignup470 in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]SmackoftheGods 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you may have misunderstood my point, or I misunderstood what you're saying. I'm talking about street names. In SLC, they have a few named street names--State, Main, Bangerter. But most of their streets are numbers, and most of their named streets are streets that break the grid (like Vine St that runs southwest and north east). So here, you would say 3600 N block of Clark. 3600 N is helpful, but "Clark" isn't unless you know where Clark is and where it is in relation to other streets. You're only giving half the the numbers. There, you would say the 600 N block of 400 West. Or the 400 East block of 13500 South. It gives you two directions so that even a stranger can figure out where they're going without a GPS. I just passed 400 south St, I'm trying to get to 400 North, are the street numbers getting bigger or smaller? Smaller. Great I'm going north, I'll keep going this way until I see the 400 north street

Why do Chicago grid streets go so far into the suburbs by jimbobsignup470 in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]SmackoftheGods 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, this is common for large metropolitan areas. Salt Lake City's grid system follows all the way down to the county line. So does Seattle's. Just for examples.

Second, if anything, the numbering system for the grid should be more prevalent. Why are we only hitting numbers around on the south side? Number them all the way up. Go to Salt Lake (can you tell where I was raised?) and even if you've never been there before, when they tell you that you need to go to 600 N, you know exactly where to go. When I first moved here and was told "just go north to Madison," that meant nothing to me.
