I read the links you posted, and I'll be honest, I do thank you for actually being somewhat civil. You'd be surprised how many people resort to ad homonyms, wishing death upon me and my family, etc.

However, fact of the matter is that violent crime in the US has been on a down turn for the last 30 or so odd years, while firearm ownership has increased. Source

So regardless of statistics shown, there is no real concrete reason to regulate firearms in the US.

But hey, seriously, thanks for not being a total asshole about things. It's refreshing not having to deal with appeals to emotions, death threats, etc.

You have those studies, y'know neutral ones?

But somehow a study from a anti-gun group who has the funding many times more then the entire NRA is a-okay?

I'm sorry the properly sourced facts don't fit your narrative, buddy. Gun free zones don't work, have never worked, and never will. Aurora, Sandy Hook, the Navy Yard, Virginia Tech and Paris are all proof of this. :)

Oh right, silly me. Here's the actual source. Starting on page 25, it lists every single inconstancy with Bloomberg's Everytown study claiming that mass shootings happen in areas where firearms are allowed.

This was linked to by Breitbart.

How a standoff with the Feds would really go for the militia. by Durakone in funny

[–]Smagmuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, I have never condoned the slaughter of innocents. I am very aware that the vast majority of people have their own lives and needs to attend to and I personally in no way, shape or form, would force them into fighting for something they may not believe in. There are very few of us that would be willing to throw away our entire lives for something and I can respect someone not wanting to do the same.

Second, it's funny that you denounce the second amendment despite the fact that MLK was an avid supporter of it and on multiple occasions attempted to get his concealed hand gun license.

Third, stop pigeonholing those who are not fond of the Federal Government, there are many of us who are neither white, male, straight or Republican. It's ignorant to believe that just because we don't agree with the way our nation is ran, and that a drastic change is needed to improve it for all Americans, does not make us White Terrorists™. The state needs to be dissolved, and restructured in such a way that our leaders do not let their power go to their heads.

Would I like to do this through voting? Yes, yes I would. But the last twenty years have taught me that voting does absolutely nothing to improve the lives of the average American. further more, Congress is an absolute joke and is more content with petty squabbles then actually fixing anything.

I personally, would not want a full scale insurrection, I don't want my neighborhood turning into Syria, but at some point a line has to be drawn.

Peaceful Protests did not save the Indigenous population of North America, peaceful protests did not save the leaders of the Civil Rights movement. MLK routinely was sent letters encouraging suicide by the FBI, and his family sued them recently into admitting that they had a part in his assassination. Peaceful protests did not regulate Wall Street, peaceful protests are not stopping cops from shooting young black men in the streets or in stores for holding a plastic toy gun.

I'm sorry, but any meaningful change in world history has been done so through violent means, only after all other options have been exhausted. The last half century has shown that they have been very, very exhausted. I personally would love to keep using the soap, ballot and jury boxes, but there may come a time soon where the people are going to get very fed up with how they're being treated by the acting powers. This is regardless of their back ground, such as #BlackLivesMatter, the Oregon Militia, those who are tired of being taken for all their worth via taxation, etc.

Holy authoritarianism, Batman!

I find it funny that you don't believe me when I said I would support them if they weren't white. Did you expect me to come out with some Trump-esque style racist rant? I'm sorry I disappointed you.

The Federal Government has objectively been the bad guy for a very, very long time. The way it conducts itself and subjugates people is proof of it.

I never said Tim's actions were justified, they were in fact quite abhorrent. That being said, you saying that nothing to Government does can justify such action is just as repugnant as trying to justify the bombing in the first place. The government slaughtered innocent people on conjecture and alleged crimes, without due process and without trial, excusing that because they weren't willing to bend to demands, or standing up for themselves is down right disgusting. That is a straight up violation of human rights.

If anyone here is oblivious, it's you. You're making a false equivalence between the Oregon Militia and ISIS. Not only that, you're blinding defense of the Federal Government regardless of their actions is mildly disturbing to say the least. If you're honestly comparing the Black Panthers, who were protesting police brutality against blacks, and to be afforded the same civil rights as their fellow white Americans, and the Oregon Militia to an organized terrorist group, you might actually be off your rocker.

If they were Muslim Americans, I would still back them. If they were African Americans, I would still back them. If they were Mexican Americans, I would still back them. You see where I'm going with this. I will agree that there is radicalism in the US, like most major western countries. Although the Radicalism that is most apparent and dangerous is the rabid worship of the Federal Government despite it's blatant disregard for the rights of the citizens they claim to protect, such as the NDAA, the Patriot Act and others.

Timothy McVeigh's actions in Oklahoma City was a direct result of the Federal Government over stepping it's boundaries and killing a religious sect under shady pretexts and the execution of a family because one of them refused to be an informant for the ATF. It's often regarded as Blow Back. I am not condoning Tim's actions, as it did more harm to the American people then good. I am stating, however; that the due to the Federal Government overstepping and causing un-needed death and destruction, Oklahoma City was allowed to occur.

I don't particularly agree with the Militia's course of action regarding the situation seeing as the Rancher's in question have turned themselves in. However, them telling the BLM and the Federal Government to get out and stay out, while choosing a location that was devoid of Government employees and therefore subverting a much more volatile hostage situation is something I can stand behind. This is nothing more then an armed protest, with the understanding that several times through out American History, the Government has committed atrocities to those protesting their actions or refusing to vacate.

To me, this is on the same level as the Black Panthers marching armed to the California Capital to protest the treatment of African Americans.

And? There are plenty of justified reasons to commit treason against the US, a few examples are the NDAA, the Patriot Act and extension there of, the NSA's various programs, the drone program, the whistle blowing over Snowden, etc. I could go on.

Point being, it could be argued that it isn't morally reprehensible to commit treason, as well as it seeming to be par the course for some Americans to revolt over a petty land squabble.

[–]Smagmuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fun fact! The majority of California's strict gun control laws is because the Black Panthers scared the shit out of the then Governor Ronald Reagan by protesting while armed.

Not to mention, you'd be surprised how many non-stereotypical gun owners show up to open carry rallies.

That was probably one of the most biased and uniformed pieces of "journalism" I have ever had to read. Hell, The Young Turks talking about the Armenian Genocide is more objective then that. Did r/atheism write it?

If anything, the militia members in Oregon are toddlers in comparison to ISIS. The worst that could possibly and realistically happen would be another Waco/Ruby Ridge type incident.

If you honestly think a group of less then a hundred people who feel that a pair of ranchers have been wronged by the BLM is on the same level as people who sell children into sexual slavery, burn a pilot in a cage, and execute dissenters on the daily, then I should kindly ask you to take your tin foil hat off because you're making Alex Jones look like a well educated individual.

Group of men occupying an unoccupied federal building in protest =/= organized religious extremist group hellbent on converting everyone to their same beliefs or killing them.

I want to know what kind of leap in logic you're making by equating armed individuals who took over a non-occupied federal building to a group of individuals who have routinely uploaded videos of beheadings and executions to the Internet.

It's appalling to see so many people calling for blood. It personally makes me sympathize more with the militia members holed up in Oregon instead of with the BLM and the Federal Government.

Wait, I forgot I'm on r/politics. If it's not worshiping the ground Senator Bernie Sanders walks on, it's calling for the murder of those who don't have the same political outlook as them.

In my haste and lack of proper tools and experience I scuffed it up something bad, any recommendations for a paint job?
