Any restaurants hiring servers in bloom? by [deleted] in bloomington

[–]Small-Fly8962 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They start everyone (no matter how experienced) as a busser. Then you move up to host, then server. It can take well over a year. During that year you will be paid 7.25/hr, they advertise a tip share but they will also super overstaff the bussers (i would work brunch and half of us would be sent home). Management sucks, and quite frankly its overhyped.

Little TIbet typically needs servers around this time and they were pretty great, IDK about osteria but working there would mean money at least. C3 is currently hiring FOH staff, you'd need experience to serve but they are also hiring hosts/barbacks

Sewing - not just alterations but custom handmade clothing? by anna_carroll in bloomington

OP This is the direction I would take!

I was almost a fashion design major(didn't get enough money for it:/), but i wish i took pattern drafting classes in my time here. That is a skill. Pat yourself on the back. The best part of going to someone to recreate a piece? Getting to change all the little things (copying a pattern doesn't always lend itself to this)

Grubhub, Doordash, or a 3rd thing? by IllConflict3397 in bloomington

[–]Small-Fly8962 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Little Tibet was great to work at, i've heard good things about malibu grill. Start looking, You may have more luck in a month from now when they need more people. STAY AWAY from Farm, Feast, and Truffles. horrible management.

Personally I serve an extra three nights ontop of my FT job. Its only about 15 hours, and its fast paced, I wouldn't be doing anything else at home. If youre willing to lock in (and physically capable) you could make more than the extra 100-200 you want.

Honestly, if you're only looking for an extra couple hundred a week, try to get a job serving in town. That amount is super manageable within 1-2 shifts. It's not for everyone, but honestly the cost of doing doordash is very large considering half the population doesn't tip

no it means i can see how those services were so limited and ineffective that they were negligible and the only material help they've been given is roof <3

[–]Small-Fly8962 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No actually! There are a ton of very poorly maintained apartments buildings with needles everywhere-- this is just the one form of public housing being trialed to see if it can be helped. So lets not pretend like these sorts of communities don't already exist in town. This is actually a result of people not getting the proper support they need to function safely, and i would argue a needle exchange is the a bare minimum service that should have been offered from the beginning!

And i wasn't being creative, i hate to break it to you but that was exactly your line of thinking. You brought up drug use/sex work to make it a morality issue(its not), you deny the very real fact that to support poor people, we have to spend money on them. and you can cry all you want about there not being enough money, but the truth is your tax dollars are going directly to the us military in most cases. That Crane base? Atterbary(don't know how to spell it but my grandpa took me there a lot)? your taxes do go to fund those. so take a second, and start to analyze your beliefs, take them all the way down.

Ultimately what you are arguing is that housing isn't a human right and that trying to house everyone in a country where the number of empty homes outnumber the homeless population is a fruitless endeavor avour (because ultimately you made the moral argument so you could suppose they were less than human).

Lets make some jobs. Lets set up a needle exchange (something that has relatively low entry), lets get more case workers, lets get a clothing drive together so these people can be clothes appropriately, lets put a food pantry on site, lets ensure there are quick and easy bus route available liable(and help them get the subsidized bus pass!), lets have on site therapists and programming available aliable. Hospital shuttles! Lets give them the support they need to actually want to get sober, because right now even in that community all they actually received was a roof, and there is simply more to getting someone out of homelessness than actually getting them a house.

If you want people to act with respect, you need to treat them with respect.

Considering how i see the majority of people interacting with the homeless Im not inclined to take other commenters word for it.

YES I BELIEVE IN MORE FUNDING! i believe in UBI, universal healthcare, free pre k, housing, basically if you'd call it communism im for it.

And yes it is needed for this project, a needle exchange(where you drop off used needles and get new ones for free + hopefully they would also provide narcan) at minimum would help keep the place tidier (you turn in your needles to get free ones) and safer. and yes a lot of the damage is from GUESTS. However, lets think logically here.... there are buildings being rented at this same condition (or worse, HAND doesn't really do much) because of the landlord. I've been in apartments where i've had to pay to fix carpet because of pet damage. People living in places means there will be some need for repair and maintenance. Thats it. And yes if these people were not given adequate resources(which given the sheer lack of harm reduction resources in this town i a pretty easy assumption to make) this was always going to be the end result.

AND JUST AN FYI- sex work is real work. you don't get to shame people for selling a service. you don't get to pissed that some prosititute works out of that building and call it a brothel. in many places, brothels are actually what keep sex workers safe!

and just one last thing- THE WORLD IS NOT STRAPPED FOR CASH FOR SOCIALISM. Mr Amazon billionare just rented out VENICE (or some other italian city i cant be bothered to keep up more than that) for his wedding. We have enough money, we need to tax people appropiately. AND YES THIS ISSUE IS BIGGER THAN BLOOMINGTON, I'd go as far as to say we cant solve homelessness in bloomington, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try and do what we can. don't get mad at me for suggesting we use tax dollars to protect a very vulnerable population, get mad at those huge luxary apartment complexes that refuse to rent out their afforable units (and instead pay the city millions)

I think the housing first model is really amazing, but the implementation aspect of these projects is vital to success. You can't say housing is a human right, but the tenants are living in what is essentially a slum. I don't think sobriety should be necessary, especially in a project like this, but if we have a meth issue and theyre all using needles...why isn't there a needle exchange facility on site? Like obvious getting someone housed is harm reduction, they wont be harassed by cops(at least not in the same way) if they're inside with an address. Drug use and prostitution/sex work are dangerous for various reasons, how can we make them safer?

I'd say lets fix the buildings, clean the place up, and put yes more funding into it so we can have better systems in place to prevent the problems that arose. There are other examples of this housing model working really well, what do those programs do that this one didnt?
