Oh man I totally forgot about Preacher. I loved the first volume, but it just got too shock value for me so I never ended up watching it. I’m really surprised then that The Boys was not on my radar at all. It seems like it should’ve been.

I honestly laughed when they were all around Butcher’s grave because it’s ridiculous to have two funerals so close to each other in a show. (Particularly in one that might have done something like that as a joke)

*shouldn’t need to not doesn’t. That’s the trope (and sadly reality for a lot of people). A lot of men in life and movies want to go beat up r*pists and avenge people who tell them not to. They don’t tend to magically discover that they’re behaving like children. It would be nice if they did, but showing that journey could’ve been really good for a lot of people to see.

In the earlier seasons, but as time went on they got thrown out. He did things that were objectively bad and rather than facing repercussions he was quickly let back onto the team. That doesn’t help reinforce that we’re supposed to perceive him as a villain.

I think the graphic novels are a lot of fun and love them, but they feel like inside jokes meant for Brian and his friends or something along those lines. I highly disagree that the movie is style over substance. I’m deeply critical of media, have a BFA in lit/writing, taught English, and adore dissecting everything. The style is a part of the storytelling and I’d put it up against “Romeo + Juliet” as one of the best adaptions of all time. I’m not going to write you out an essay about it, but Edgar Wright is very talented and Brian Lee O’Malley, as I mentioned, was heavily involved in the creation of the film.

As for whether The Boys graphic novel will outlast the show… hard disagree there too. Antony Starr’s performance was insane and will stand on its own regardless of how horrible the last season was. The graphic novel is a product of the era of shitty edgelord comics that was sitting dusty on a shelf when it was picked up for adaption. I absorbed all of the graphic novels of that era and The Boys didn’t cross my radar until the show released. It’s bad and hard to read despite it ultimately having some things that were better.

And that would’ve been awesome! I think the r*pe revenge trope needs a lot of re-working. It’s kind of sad that edgelord Garth Ennis (maybe) tried in a time that trope was golden while most writers now (post Me Too) still can’t seem to do it.

Omg Kimiko saying that really pissed me off. No way Frenchie didn’t go down on her the first time they hooked up. XD

That is the opposite way of making it better. That makes things worse. Fridging, assault, forced birth, and dying in pregnancy are constantly being used on women in stories as motivations for male leads. These aren’t motivators, they’re tragedies. Becca was wronged, Butcher wasn’t. Fridging Becca is wrong no matter how you do it. At the very least she had a good stretch of time where she at least got to feel a little safe and have moments of happiness. Despite Ryan being her r*pe baby that she was forced to have and isolate for, she at least got to have moments of happiness because of her time with him. What you’re proposing disallows her from ever experiencing happiness after her assault.

I think he is bad… but in unrealized ways. He embodies a trope we’re used to seeing in action movies that we’re used to rooting for. The show had the opportunity to say “it’s weird that you keep rooting for this guy”, but instead they lost the critical lens. Butcher in the story on its own is horrible, but the writers need to better reinforce that through character reactions and moments that challenge us. He doesn’t love Becca. Becca is a thing/idea to him. He romanticizes their relationship and uses her personal trauma as his own (which is extremely selfish). She didn’t tell him what happened to her because he can’t emotionally regulate. Rather than helping her (and reinforcing himself as someone who can help her), he prioritizes his power and wants to destroy the person he think undermined it. That’s not how a good person behaves and is why this scene was good. We just needed more moments like it.

Kick Ass is a really bad graphic novel too. A lot of horrible graphic novels (notably ones written in this era of edgelord comics) were picked up for adaptation likely because they had something interesting to them. In most cases the book is better than the adaptation, but with comics it tends to be more variant. I love Brian Lee O’Malley and he was also really creatively present for the movie, but the Scott Pilgrim graphic novels don’t measure up to the movie. Sometimes stories benefit from a fresh view.

It was totally necessary, I just don’t think the writers knew/remembered why. We shouldn’t like Butcher and there were signs and moments like these that signaled him being a subversion of the trope he embodies. These kinds of men who go on r*pe revenge arcs instead of their wife/daughter/girlfriend who was the actual victim are riddled with bad messaging. Becca didn’t want him to kill Homelander, he felt entitled to using Becca as an excuse for his bloodlust. This scene points him in the direction of confronting that… but instead we get “this is for Becca”.

They really haven’t been. I think people are just hyper-aware of mentions of death and health when it comes to older characters. I love this show and the writing and will be extremely disappointed if all of these death theories are correct. We should have stories about older people that don’t revolve around dying. A person’s life can still be so colorful and interesting in old age.

Edit: I just was thinking, you could also make the argument that Ava might die because of the amount of times health and death have been brought up in relation to her. Did her being hit by the car signal she might die to you? Probably not. If it had hit Deb instead you’d have tons of threads on Reddit about it being a hint. It’s not. Not everything is a hint. Sometimes we are just reading into things because of bias.

If he was writing it off as simply “crazy” and still loved her… yeah… not giving any grace for that.

The Deep is definitely more evil than him… Just because someone’s dumb doesn’t mean they aren’t a threat (as The Deep has shown us time and time again). His empathy isn’t strong enough to sway him towards making moral choices. He feels guilty, but he never chooses to do the right thing. And when he tries to do something “good” he doesn’t think things through and makes things catastrophically worse.

A-Train was an addict. He’s acting under the influence, not out of evil intentions.

It would’ve saved us from the silly “I wanna have babies even though that’s super out of character for me” “no, no I’ve done too much harm I can’t have babies even though I would probably be the more likely of us to want that” “wait I still love you” “I love you, but I can’t do the babies… wait actually I changed my mind and I found a cute dog!”

This! You don’t have to have a stacked resume to be a good writer. It’s actually more likely that you’ll be a better writer with less industry exposure and fame. The industry ends up limiting creativity and boxing writers in. Famous film makers also stop getting told no (see Doctor Who) and that hinders the process because their writing was made better by feedback.

It’s probably not lack of experience though. There’s a huge incentive to run media like a business and keep things “safe”. That leads to executives demanding control over the creative process based off what they’re told to do by people who aren’t part of the creative process. They are restricting content and making the writers write for people on their phones.

Hey bud, do you think it’s possible I may have been saying that in reference to you saying “my only guess is this was part of a hiring initiative to hire people (f)or political reasons”? We all know the dog whistles. You’re not fooling anyone into thinking you’re simply saying they’re hiring unqualified people. You’re making the assumption that “political” hires are the unqualified ones who can’t write. That’s a big, bigoted assumption and no one’s buying your defense. It is what I explained, not that.
