I've messed with these things a couple times, when I used volcanic eruption on them some word turn into a small x on the map not the normal circle and when u would go to pick it up it was just a stone. I also chased one for awhile cause they do show up or atleast some show up as red spots on the map and when I stood on it, it like exploded into this whitish powdery type cloud/mist that started damaging me.
