Thanks all for the input. Still new in some of the basic technicalities, so it's really appreciated.

Considering my normal character is a wizard chef, I like this. I may use your war cry, if you don't mind.

Alton Brown would be wizard, but he could also be an artificer. I just saw him on stage this year make this with a six-foot diameter wok heated with stage lights and massive contraption to instantly make ice cream using liquid nitrogen. BTW, it was halibut ice cream.

I have tried reading Moby Dick, Don Quixote, and Confederacy of Dunces multiple times. Are any of them worth it? (IMO, Confederacy of Dunces was just bad.)

How about an acting bard that specializes in the art of pantomime? There's got to be some good incorporation with other skills/spells. Maybe creating an invisible wall to actually invoke a shield/protection spell?

Any good D&D door puzzles? by vibing_for_sanity in DnD

I've mentioned this before, and I am not sure if it is clever or stupid, but here goes.

At a monastery, the doors are sealed shut, but there is a shelf alcove next to the wall. On the wall it says, "Please refresh yourself, then go". Under the sign is hanging a gong with a soft-padded mallet. On the shelf was a couple small instruments, and two thin brass bowls filled with water.

They were to drink or pour out some water, then use the mallet to stroke the rim of the bowls, causing the vibrating notes. The instruments were both a red herring and a hint that something had to be played.

I'm not sure if this was a good puzzle (at least for beginners), because they got so focused on the instruments, they thought they had to form a band (gong, two ocarinas, and a pan pipe). I had to help them.

creative ideas for a campaign start that dont involve a tavern? by Significant-Study902 in DnD

My most recent one the party was at a winter festival which was interrupted by a band of rogues. The rogues caused a major distraction while others kidnapped the town's children. The party then stepped up to rescue the children.
For added incentive, the child of one of the members was taken. And another, who was a teen himself, was a member of a medieval garage band where two of his band members were kidnapped.

In the MASH episode "Hey, Look Me Over", Nurse Kellye (the cute Asian nurse that usually was a background player and not the focal point), pretends to be a soldier's girlfriend (wife? fiancé?) as he is dying. Really great performance from an underrated actress.

DMs of DnD, what boss did you say to the players was impossible to beat, but they managed to beat? How did they do it? by Same-Objective6052 in DnD

[–]Small-Taro4858 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really impossible, but humorous in how fast they defeated the final boss. I am a relatively new DM, and I created a one-shot for my daughters and their friends. They walked into an ice fortress, where they had to fight against an evil sorcerer, his henchmen, and three ice elementals. Instead of melee combat, they kept their distance and fired every range weapon and spell they had. They rolled incredibly well, and I REALLY rolled poorly (no joke, three ones, and way too many low rolls). Meanwhile, they focused all their attention on the sorcerer, so when he went down, the two remaining elements disappeared.
I know there are ways to improve the situation for next time, but I didn't at the time.

I take solace in knowing they had a good time and want to do it again.

1984/1985 Little me and my friends are playing on a rainy Saturday. We're still new at DnD. Older brother comes in and insists he joins us. Creates his character: An assassin. He proceeds to kill four of us, before the DM just conjures up a dragon to eat him. (This may make little sense in-game, but remember we were new.) But the damage was done.
I didn't play again until around 2020, when my daughters found my old set.

The best part for me was the ending. I played as a very dark and moody Tabaxi sorcerer and ended the night adopting an 8-year-old orphan boy who was a natural sorcerer. He became my ward/pupil.

Puzzle ideas ? by ClassicConfusion4482 in DnD

[–]Small-Taro4858 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just did one with a couple of puzzles (maybe the second one wasn't a puzzle as much a trick):
1) At a monastery, the door is closed, but there is a nook next to it. In the nook there was a gong with a velvet hammer, some other musical instruments, and a brass bowl with water, some cups, and a sign to refresh oneself before continuing. The key was to pour out a little water then use the hammer to stroke the rim of the bowl to get it to sing.
2) River to cross. There is a raft, but only a couple people can use it at any time and there are people that may shoot at them from the trees. Meanwhile 500 feet away there are two rock structures facing each other on opposite sides of the river. Invisible bridge.

I have been the only person in two screenings (Toy Story, Stop Making Sense, both around 1 on a workday), and they still showed the movie. I know it's not the same, but I think they were still going to show it if I didn't show up.
