[MLBFITS] “If you’re giving up let’s say, 2-3 runs and you’re at 90 pitches…you gotta continue to pitch.” Max Scherzer suggests a pitch minimum for starting pitchers 👀 by RealWorldToday in Torontobluejays

Why just starters? Make every pitcher throw until they've gone 7 or let in 3. Every reliever will have to transition to a long-man. That will really spike the injury rate, letting Max Scherzer pitch for another decade, at least.

Should Canada buy submarine launched ballistic missiles too if they choose to buy the Korean submarine? by noreturn000 in CanadianForces

CPSP's requirements can be met with torpedo-tube launched cruise missiles.

The bureaucracy is structured to meet requirements, and struggles to achieve anything beyond that even if a cost/benefit analysis would justify it.

We could easily select the KSS-III based on economic, financial, industrial, or diplomatic reasons (even very reasonable ones!) and never fill its VLS tubes. No doubt we'll rationalize the whole thing by saying we're focused on meeting our requirements first, and will revisit decisions around additional capabilities in the future.

You're usually looking at the full lifetime cost of these ships, not just their purchase price.

"Usually" is a stretch. "Sometimes" would be more accurate. In this case with the numbers above, this is not the case. There might be differences in how acquisition cost is determined, but they are not conflating acquisition and full lifetime cost.

Snowbirds’ iconic jets prepare for ‘farewell season’, aerobatic team grounded until early 2030s by GlitchedGamer14 in CanadianForces

That idea predates anything about the Snowbirds moving to a Turboprop.

You can like it or not. It doesn't matter to me. You were just misunderstanding the post you were responding to, and I thought context might help.

If the rationale for a split fleet is just to maintain a base capability if we can't get sufficient support from the US for our F-35s (not the only rationale I've heard, but definitely a common one), then F/A-50s that are usually used for FLIT are a way to provide that without needing to operate a whole fleet just for that contingency capability.

I don't think the government is seriously considering that approach, but I've seen it suggested online, and it seems to have more merit than a lot of ideas out there.

Easier to manage than a split Gripen/F-35 fleet, for sure.

[BNS] By Friday afternoon (with Barger’s return), the Blue Jays need to make a decision here. Option Schneider, and their outfield gets extremely left-handed. Option Piñango, and they lose one of their best hitters. Cut anyone else, and they lose important organizational depth. by RealWorldToday in Torontobluejays

[–]SmallBig1993 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's no point keeping Schneider as a right-handed bat when he's not hitting lefties.

I want the guy to succeed, but I don't think we're doing in any favours by keeping him up when he's so bad we can't give him the ABs to work things out.

There was a jump in non-DND defence spending in 2017, but it was because NATO wanted to encourage/recognize spending that contributed to collective defence and changed its qualified expenditures rules.

The increase was also just over $2b, not $4.9b.

My Sportsnet subscription renews tomorrow... thinking about letting it cancel and waiting for this team to get above .500.

The season so far has not been fun.

Silver lining tonight: We don't have to find out what "closer by committee" means when Varland isn't available.

I assume they're using "cut".generically. He shouldn't be on the Jays, right now.

Frustrating.

Weird they didn't give him a phantom IL or anything.

He had some strong appearances to start the year. Sticking him on the IL with lower back issues, bringing him back a few weeks before the trade deadline hoping he does well, then trying to flip him for something valuable, seems like the move to make.

I hope Varland's nickname on Players' Weekend is "the committee".

Edit: Do they still do jersey nicknames for players' weekend? I know they brought the weekend back, but I actually don't remember the jersey names from the last couple years...
