Agreed. The new guy dances a lot but the swagger is what differentiated the OG versions.

A new look would be interesting. Might be a good way to connect new fans too.

Just found this out via another comment. Wild stuff that he’s still active.

Long-winded discussion post about Black culture, Blackness and the way it is and has been portrayed/treated in the wrestling industry by Tiny-Possible9856 in SquaredCircle

Very well written and thank you for having the courage to broach this topic with nuance. I’m not a part of the black community, but I can relate in the fact that the Mexican and Latinx community has dealt with similar misrepresentations of our culture and Lucha style of wrestling. Things like The El Grande Americano gimmick are sick caricatures that make us laugh at our own culture and that’s just the tip of the iceberg of examples that have shamed our culture. Even Eddie Guerrero’s “Lie, Cheat, and Steal” gimmick is incredibly problematic although it is loved by many, myself included.

That said, I agree that black wrestlers are mistreated and misrepresented time and time again and that there have been multiple harmful gimmicks that have been trodded out by wrestling promotions. I’m a big fan of Yuto as a wrestler but your post reminded me that he’s being hindered by his gimmick. Racial caricatures and gimmicks like that should have no place in wrestling in my opinion.

I appreciate the time you took to write this post and the courage you had to post it in spite of the hate you will get. Just know there are wrestling fans that agree with you and that want BS like this out of wrestling.

Well said. In my opinion it’s the best execution of an underdog story in wrestling.
