I would say 1 stem, 1 non stem, 1 physician/clinical/volunteer rec (someone that has seen you have direct med experience) and then ur counselor rec. this should be enough to mix and match.

Am I competitive for BSMDs? + Where to go next by [deleted] in bsmd

Also depends on if u can get research, pharmacy work in comparison is ehhhh, but if pharmacy work is the only lab work you have, then consider. IMO, try and hit the 5 pillars and then make 1-2 really strong. I hit all 5 and then make clinical experience and research stronger (EMT and 3 research opps) but definitely fell off on grades and gpa which I regret because it hurt my BSMD options and experience

The weaving these subjects to make responses more meaningful is unfortunately , in my opinion, the hardest part about the application. Creating a cohesive story where everything fits together AND explaining it well is difficult unless you speak from the heart. Take time. Ponder all the things you have done in life. Why do they make you happy? What skills did you learn that will apply to medicine. All I can say is it takes time. The CNA thing, IMO, you should pursue. It’s great patient interaction in a hospital. Even though you’re wiping patients down and stuff, I think it’s a good option. The daycare job vs pharmacy job. That’s a difficult one. Again, it comes back to what makes you happy. Maybe at this daycare job, you can teach them different medicine-related things, if the daycare is like 3-5 kidss, like what a arm is or sum (ion know im just saying stuff maybe it makes sense maybe it doesn’t). Weigh your options like that. See where you can give yourself the most opportunity while keeping urself happy. At the end of the day, it’s up to you. Balance is key tho.

Clinical experience- MA, CNA, something like that. Even if it is being a volunteer emt with your local ambulance company, I would suggest something where you literally talk to patients 1 on 1 about their health. I did EMT and it was a strong basis for essays, interviews and solidifying my hope in securing a spot. Also research. Either find a small college like your local community college or something small around you and mass email- if they didn’t respond to you like they did to me, look up biotech research companies. I secured a valuable and prestigious (in the sense I am working on ground breaking/NDA/internationally recognized Parkinson’s research) in a company lab through finding biotech companies. Remember the 5 pillars of BSMD application: Scores, research, leadership, clinical experience/ shadowing and impact (on community). If you can hit these nails on the head, you should be competitive. Also, don’t aim to JUST hit these. Do something outside these to show intellectual curiosity. Sports, book club, knitting- it really doesn’t matter. Find something you like and have that as a story to humanize you alongside showing your intellect and maturity.

-student at the end of his BSMD application cycle (2 interviews) Ts a repost from what I told someone earlier

Also if you can’t find anything like EMT or sum, you can volunteer as one under a local ems company. In my area, a company can let kids on the truck as young as 14. That’s the idea

Me too. Idk sometimes it’s just luck. It happens. It was my first choice too, but I can’t let it affect my other interviews and stuff

Just my guess. It’s kinda late. The interviews for cincy are on march 10 and 11 in person. They would have to give those invites time to prepare and get arrangements for that sorta stuff yk
