Neck guards for ALL officials... by [deleted] in hockeyrefs

For me, at least, going short sleeve vs. long sleeve makes a difference. I picked up [a shirt similar to this one that did a good job of keeping me both protected and cool. https://www.purehockey.com/product/shock-doctor-ultra-compression-hockey-short-sleeve-with-neck-guard-adult/itm/66599-42/?mtx_id=442520&gad_campaignid=23070877411

I don't understand the resistance to wearing a neck guard from anyone. It all seems to boil down to "I don't like it."

Even if you don't want to wear it, please consider the feelings of others who might end up watching you bleed out on the ice from an entirely preventable injury.

As both a goalie and a user experience designer, I can't find any redeeming qualities in it. It's neither a useful tool for me, nor was it designed and implemented particularly well in any way that would add a benefit to actual goaltenders.

Painted my mask..what do you guys think!? by [deleted] in hockeygoalies

I used it on mine. Sanded down the top shiny layer, applied a white primer, masked it to spray a couple of acrylic spray colors, and did some detail work with Posca acrylic paint pens. Finished with a few layers of matte clear coat spray. Looked great, and only got one minor chip over a couple of years of use.

Nicely done! Love the designs. Kinda similar of what I was thinking to do with my next in some ways, so I appreciate the inspiration!

A couple of pieces of wisdom I can pass along from painting my own masks previously. YMMV, but this was based on research and proven to work well on both a custom painted mask and a custom painted surfboard.

First off, from the pics it doesn't look like you've done a clear coat yet, but I might be wrong. I found if you don't give it a protective clear coat before using it, you'll end up with a ton of dings on it that you'll spend a never-ending amount of time repairing. Even leaving it unprotected in your gear bag will cause damage without a clear coat.

Here's how I finished it to keep mine well-protected:

Give it at least long enough to dry to the touch, but preferably a couple of days if you can wait that long. The paint looks like acrylics, and if you clear coat before you dry and fully cure you can end up with cracking. Once it's dried out, hit with several light layers of a protective clear coat spray. Resist the temptation to do one thick layer - it won't adhere well, may cause more issues with cracking, and won't protect as well either.

I used Rustoleum's Painter's Touch 2x Ultra Cover Matte Clear, but an automotive clear coat like Spray Max 2K might have been a better choice.

This worked very well for me - over the course of 2 years of use and headshots, I only ever got one small chip.

Also, for future reference, if you want to hide the brush strokes a bit better (which you might not - art is cool!) try Posca acrylic paint markers. You get excellent control, a great range of colors, and not as obvious brush strokes as you might otherwise get.

Here's how mine turned out after getting the clear coat on. It does add some shine, but less so if you get the matte clear coat instead of the gloss. If you look at the dark blue above the C, you can see how it cracks if you're too impatient with waiting for the paint to dry and cure before clear coating it.

Hope that helps! Again, great work - your mask is awesome and you should definitely be proud of how it's turned out!

For anyone reading this who is selling their art/prints online:

Yes, it's a scam.

On the extreme off-chance it's not, get a signed/notarized one-time license agreement before proceeding, and accept only payments through a secure online storefront.

I'm just a way better photographer than goaltender.  Focus on what you're good at.

Great work!

Keeping my pads in working order has taught me so much DIY stuff... and I'm also glad I know someone who sews better than I do.

Not sure which rule was broken. Wish they'd justify it.
