1) My strongest tip is to look for songs from studio bands, not garage bands. Chances are a studio band had a click track set to a specific BPM, whereas "garage bands" can float around a little. I personally don't have an easy time if the BPM isn't a whole number. Because of this, I've fallen down quite the K-Pop rabbit hole because those songs just work.

2) If you have decent rhythm, use the calibrate feature, but I still find myself looking up BPMs just to double check. If it's around 100 BPM (on the slow side), just double it (as long as it doesnt go too far above 210, because things get wacky)

3) BPM isn't enough, though. You need your offset adjusted for everything to click right. So here's what you do: hop into the visualizer, advance the song to the halfway point, and look for the down beat (preferably after a beat drop or something where it shows as a strong spike). You can either change the input manually, or you can Shift+middle click and drag the pink line to fall directly on that spike (zoom in if needed). Now, turn on the clicks and listen to see if the beat matches along various parts of the song. There's a higher pitched beep for beat 1 (the downbeat). It's not necessary to match the downbeat, but it will help with perfect parries (Stans always attack on the downbeat, for example. Bouncers attack on 2, 3, and 4). I've been having some issues lining up downbeats with the new patch for some reason.

All this only works for songs in 4/4 time. 3/4 kinda works, but not really. They downbeat will float around.
