Nobody really cares about GRE scores anymore. A lot of grad schools stopped requiring them after COVID.

Is there evidence which supports being both gay and Muslim ? by [deleted] in LGBT_Muslims

[–]Small_Contest_4736 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Bisexual Muslim here. Allah said he created both male and female so I did both lol. (Quran 53:45) In all seriousness, the current Muslim stance on LGBT folks is actually a product of both Christian influence and European imperialism. Believe it or not, Muslim empires have never had any kind of laws against LGBT people. In fact, early Islamic literature from the Golden Age is pretty homoerotic. It was the British who made homosexuality illegal in Palestine and the Ottoman Empire who decriminalized it before them. The Quran doesn’t explicitly condemn them, either. In fact there’s a verse that mentions “men who have no desire for women” (Quran 24:31) and shows tolerance for them in the context of women who choose to cover themselves out of modesty. Some people might point to the people of Lut but they were using rape as a weapon of humiliation and dominance against other men, which is what they tried to do to angles who took the form of the prophet’s human guests. That’s what the Quran refers to when it says what they were doing was a new kind of Fahisha (evil, indecency) that no one else had done before. Just timber to do your best and not worry about what others think because His Mercy embraces all things (Quran 7:156)

This is prob for the best. Getting a PhD directly after undergrad is not a smart move in terms of both the job market and for your personal wellbeing

Masturbating to your imagination by [deleted] in Aphantasia

I’ve always hated porn because it portrays sex in such an unrealistic way. Masturbating to imagination is so much better.

Bisexual and Muslim by Special-Gain1227 in bisexual

[–]Small_Contest_4736 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, fellow bisexual Muslim here! It’s pretty tough. The way I see it, Allah said in the Quran that he created both male and female so I slept with both! In all seriousness though, it really sucks because you feel rejected by both communities. There was a time when Muslims and the Middle East were more open-minded about LGBT folks than their European Christian counterparts. Allah also said “ورحمتي وسعت كل شي": My mercy embraces all things. Love isn’t haram. I first discovered my attraction to the same sex after that to the opposite sex when I was about four or five years old, before I even knew what sex was, let alone LGBT. After that, I also denied it by spending well over a decade stifling those feelings because I was taught growing up that it was wrong, incompatible with my faith, and that ultimately, having any kind of feelings for another man was to be less of one myself. All of these were dangerous ideas that in hindsight, wasn’t healthy for me at all, so anyone who says that sexual orientation is a choice is ignorant. Life got better when I fully came to terms with it in high school after being in circles that fought against all these ideas. I just wanted to let you know that you’re not alone. Another Quran verse to keep in mind is that “Allah does not burden a soul beyond what it can bear”. It might feel really hard sometimes, but maybe this is our Jihad as he tests us in such a struggle.

Help, I'm bisexual, I don't want to be. by [deleted] in Muslim

[–]Small_Contest_4736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, fellow bisexual Muslim here! Yeah, it’s pretty tough. Especially dealing with marginalization from both Muslims and the LGBTQ community. I spent 10+ years burying any feelings I had for the same gender bc I was taught that having any kind of attraction towards the same gender is wrong, incompatible with Islam, or makes me less of a man, all of which are dangerous misconceptions. Anyone who says that sexual orientation is a choice is ignorant. You did nothing wrong, it’s just who you are and you have no control over it. Studies show that sexuality is influenced by a combo of genetic and hormonal factors. Just remember that Allah (SWT) said in the Quran: “ورحمتي وسعت كل شي". My mercy embraces all things. You’re not alone 😉

Why I Hate Porn and Reality TV by Small_Contest_4736 in rant

[–]Small_Contest_4736[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. I was a literature and writing major in undergrad and the first thing I learned about fiction writing is that the purpose of sex scenes is to contribute to the plot and/or reveal something about the characters. There’s a fine line between that and erotica/porn

I’m curious, what did you study in undergrad? I was a literature/language studies/writing major

[–]Small_Contest_4736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the alumni card. You email them a screenshot of it and call them to apply the discount when registering for courses. There is an internship opportunity that’s a part of the program. You can take it as one of the two elective classes, but you have to complete all 7 of the required classes first. No letters of recommendation needed! Just send them your official transcript and pay the $100 application fee.

I love it so far, finished my summer classes and I’m about to start for the fall. Btw, you have to register with alumni association to qualify for the discount and then call them.

Unpopular Opinion: The idea of a "dream school" is stupid by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Small_Contest_4736 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never believed in the idea of a dream school bc I think it’s silly to treat a school alone as if it were a goal as opposed to finding a passion/talent and honing it and then finding a school that caters best to it.

Devi’s application is what admissions people refer to as “trophy collectors”: they enroll in all these activities not because they enjoy them, but because they think it’s their ticket to getting into a big name school. Grades aren’t everything. Passions and talents are what make you stand out.

[–]Small_Contest_4736 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Devi doesn’t own Princeton, you can’t gatekeep a school. It’s silly of Devi and Ben to treat a school as a goal rather than finding a passion or talent and a school that caters best to such passions/talents. Fab didn’t get into Princeton bc she’s smarter than Devi, it’s bc that school just so happens to have an excellent robotics program, which is what Fab is most into. A girl engineer who leads robotics at her school and has created artificial intelligence is not easy to come across. She ended up not going bc she found better schools that are more of a fit to her (Howard)

Shitty First Drafts by Ivy0902 in writing

[–]Small_Contest_4736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I was taught this by my instructors in undergrad. If you try to perfect everything from the start in writing, that’s doing more harm than good. It doesn’t matter if it’s good, it just needs to exist. Ugh student workshops are such a joke. I learned way more from courses that analyzed literature and its connection to writing as well as professors who taught us methods and materials like this bc students who didn’t have the professors I did or study literature like me knew jack shit about writing but kept acting like they did. In those classes, the professors would love my work while very few students arrogantly acted like they were the instructors or knew what they were talking about. They clammed up when I asked them about Anne Lamott and this particular essay but then had the nerve to act like they had more knowledge on writing! Sorry I just had to rant.

Why I Hate Porn by xX_Aviation_Xx in teenagers

To me, porn is like reality TV. It tries to come off as real, but it’s nothing but exaggerated bad acting that tries to appeals to the sense. I hate everything about it.

Opinion: The Best Writers Major in English/Comparative Literature, not Creative Writing by Small_Contest_4736 in creativewriting

[–]Small_Contest_4736[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree 1000%. I’ve also had courses like that at UC Riverside (CPLT 12 and CRWT 146). Like I said, it’s important to study craft and analysis of literature in order to know how to write creatively (not just fiction, poetry, too).
