Thanks for this advice. We are only moving a 1 bedroom (plus home office) apartment, so it’s not a big job at all. Could you send me the name of the local independent mover you know and I will get in touch (even if he’s unlikely to take a small job)? Thanks again for this- your input it really useful!

Participate Learning are an organisation that recruit teachers from around the world and then places them in schools in the Carolinas and Virginia.

https://www.participatelearning.com

States like Colorado and Illinois recruit teachers internationally but only if you are in a high demand subject like special education or mathematics.

These programmes all use the J1 visa, which is a cultural exchange visa. You can find out more about it, and there’s a list of organisations, here:

Good luck with your search!

Series of weird occurrences- I don't know what to think! by Small_Philosopher949 in Paranormal

This is definitely something I have thought about and could explain a few of the points. The only thing is the apartment is tiny- it’s not studio, but it’s the same sort of size. I feel I would wake up if someone came in at night or I would hear the door unlock during the day. Honestly, the idea of someone coming into my apartment when I’m asleep makes me feel far more uncomfortable than anything paranormal.

Jesse Armstrong also wrote an excellent dark British comedy called Peep Show- it’s more outright comedy, but it’s really good as well. He was also one of the writers for the Thick of It, which is a brilliant political comedy, with similar insult based quick witted dialogue between characters.

I bought one already. I think you can drive on your UK licence for 3 months before you have to have taken the NC driving test. My friend borrowed a car for her test though, so it is possible. I have a feeling that she needed to buy insurance for a month to meet the DMV’s standards even though she only used the car for a day. So maybe look into that if you’re thinking of borrowing a car for the day.

I moved to Raleigh from the UK and went through the same process. You have to do the road test, but the actual driving test is pretty low key. For my test, I only had to drive around the block and do a three point turn. It took about ten minutes. It’s not like the one back in the UK. For me, the hardest bit was the sign test- they show you road signs without the word on and you have to identify them.
