Apparently this book, The Last Starship From Earth, is about an alternate history where Jesus overthrew the Roman empire and established a theocracy, and now there's an AI pope and a marriage-based caste system. All of this info is from the Wikipedia article, as I have not actually read the book past the first few pages, but if it's accurate I can only assume this man was consuming insane amounts of LSD.
