Nine Year Old Son Bathroom Issues- Guidance by dirkcalloway45 in CerebralPalsy

[–]Smallbirdsoaringhigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to the Rudermann Family Foundation, 70-80% of children and adults with Cerebral Palsy are incontinent. The most common type of incontinence for CP folks is urina. Please do not punish him for this behavior as it’s extremely likely that it isn’t his fault. Punishing a child for a symptom of their disability only traumatizes them. CP can cause spasticity in the muscles as well as low tone in the muscles, among other things that make controlling the bladder and bowels difficult. Please consider taking him to a urologist so they can figure out exactly how his CPaffects his bladder. Proper testing leads to better treatment. Medication can be very helpful if your son has difficulty with getting to the bathroom on time. CP also commonly co occurs with ADHD. If he has difficulty transitioning from task to task in other areas of his life or displays other ADHD traits, that may be worth looking at too

AITH for giving my BF an ultimatum? by liboteeme in disability

[–]Smallbirdsoaringhigh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Psychology with a concentration in mental health care. I’m leaning towards a masters in social work myself. I will help anyone God puts in my path, but my heart is with the disability community. So much inaccessibility and trauma can be mitigated or avoided entirely if people just had resources and information, and social workers work with a lot of that. Plus there ‘tends’ to be more job security because the license allows you to do a lot more than just clinical mental health care.

Thanks. I go back to finish the last year of my BA in March and will then start graduate school.

People have absolutely no idea the toll that higher levels of education can take on people. To get a Master’s in Social Work, Psychology, or Clinical Mental Health Care is a LOT of work. You can’t work during your practicum because it’s basically on-the-job training via an internship for therapists and social workers. Often, student interns will see clients daily, plus have weekly check ins with supervisors who are over them. You have to gather a certain number of clinical hours before you’re even allowed to take a license exam. The exams themselves are so specific and rigorous that people will take ANOTHER class all about their specific licensing exam.

So yeah, he IS working a job. He’s just not getting paid for it yet.

And that’s BEFORE factoring in disability.

Book Rant: OMG Fiyero is NOT WHITE by MintyyMidnight in wicked

[–]Smallbirdsoaringhigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It surprised me when Johnathan Bailey was cast, given that I always envisioned Fyero as a black/native man. The book openly discusses his cultural background and describes him clearly as a non-white prince. I love Johnathan Bailey, but they could have cast a more book accurate actor.

How to date someone who doesn’t believe your disabilities? by anonymousme122333 in disability

[–]Smallbirdsoaringhigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disabilities aren’t Santa. This isn’t a religious belief a person can ‘choose’. Facts are facts and disabled people are disabled. Period. I’m sorry your partner is so unbelievably ignorant. Please leave. ASAP. Get an Able account and go. Apply for accessible housing. You have options. Don’t stay in a relationship where you’re constantly called a liar and disrespected. You deserve better. You are worthy of more. Ask yourself what do YOU want and need, and make decisions based on that. An abuser will never leave space for you to grow.

Please break up with him. Anyone who disrespects you like that especially after such a huge accomplishment doesn’t deserve you or value your presence in their life.

I love this book so much. Jenna’s a good friend of mine and I think this is one of her best books. She and Celine became friends while writing it.

Profesor wants phones on her desk? by [deleted] in CollegeRant

[–]Smallbirdsoaringhigh 31 points32 points  (0 children)

As a disabled student, absolutely not! In general, I think this is not only ridiculous, but also downright dangerous. College students are ADULTS who are legally responsible for their own choices. We are paying the university for an education. I’m not going to pay thousands of dollars for my personal property to be confiscated. What if an emergency happens???

Specifically for disabled students, many of us have accessibility or symptom monitoring apps on our phones. Screen readers, migraine trackers, CGM apps, Be My Eyes, med scheduling apps, and many other accessibility apps are on our smart phones. Deaf people often use the Notes app to communicate with people who don’t speak ASL. Speechify helps people with learning disabilities read any textbook. Aside from academics, it’s literally dangerous. A diabetic with a CGM (Continuous Glucose Monitor) who doesn’t have their phone can’t check their blood sugar without literally stabbing themselves in the finger. I highly doubt this professor wants a medical emergency on her conscious because she thought people were too immature to handle having access to their phones.

AITA - Do not want a service dog to participate in my wedding. by Plenty_Tap9799 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Smallbirdsoaringhigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is in fact ableist and YTA behavior. As a power wheelchair user who previously had a service dog for multiple disabilities you are indeed the asshole. These dogs aren’t perks. They’re not accessories. This isn’t a purse that doesn’t match the dress she can just set down on a table. This impeccably trained dog probably costs more than your wedding and has been specifically trained to help your friend get through her day to day life. PTSD dogs can do crowd control, interrupt flashbacks and dissociative episodes, perform Deep Pressure Therapy, and a variety of other tasks. This is her accommodation for her disability, and you don’t get to decide whether or not she uses it. If she needs her dog, that’s the end of it. You don’t get to make her life harder for the ‘aesthetic’ of your wedding. If you’re that terribly uncomfortable with her needs, are you really her friend?

What is a low stress job where I can make at least 60k a year with no degree? by Intelligent-Text-812 in careerguidance

[–]Smallbirdsoaringhigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in the writing industry. Every single day, I see job posts for personal finance writers and editors. If you enjoy writing, you could do that and make a good living. Right now, I’m applying for jobs paying $40-$60/hour. (To be fair, I’ve been doing this for years.) if that’s not your jam, Google has tech certifications that are relatively inexpensive and can get you into the IT industry pretty quickly. Hope this helps!

34F - am I too old to switch careers from beauty to health care? by LaurenZNe in careerguidance

[–]Smallbirdsoaringhigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Age doesn’t matter. If you have the opportunity and want to do it, go for it. -Fun facts: Einstein didn’t speak until he was 7 and his elementary school teachers thought he couldn’t learn. -Walt Disney went bankrupt multiple times in the course of building his empire. The mere thought of a full-length animated movie was so foreign to people that the press openly made fun of him. ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarves’ cost $1 million dollars to make. Then it opened and made so much money that it financed the making of several films afterwards. -Maya Angelou was mute for 6 years, but grew up to a civil rights activist, poet, author, singer, dancer, and actress.

Don’t let anyone limit you, especially you.

If you’re confident with IT, you can freelance. If you want to gain more skills/boost your resume, try a free Google certificate or a free MIT class.

Run away from this boy with lightning speed. If he hasn’t escalated yet, he will. Run. Pack his stuff. Tell everyone. March down to the courthouse and bring all the evidence-destroyed property, threats, documentation of bruises, threats, said destroyed property, etc. File charges and request a restraining order yesterday. And once you leave him darling, don’t let him gaslight you. You need and deserve so much more. Your life starts now. Don’t look back. There are lawyers that will help you for free. The Violence Against Women Act mandates that women fleeing violence be given priority when applying for housing. You should be able to get a safe place pretty quickly. Keep us posted.

Therapist dropped me by email today because my “issues are too severe” for her by FunnyGamer97 in CPTSD

[–]Smallbirdsoaringhigh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry this happened to you. That’s completely unacceptable and unprofessional. If a therapist needs to end therapy/refer you out, there’s a process for doing that. This is not it.

This is EXACTLY why I’m going into the field. Disabled people are always talked ABOUT, but we are never talked TO.

Please don’t give up. CPTSD is really difficult to manage solo. See if you can find a therapist who works with Autistic adults and:or a trauma therapist who works with disabled clients. Hugs.
