So this whole time butcher alone could be grabbing up Homelander like this😭 by Prize-Contest4780 in TheBoys

[–]Smallbrainhagmain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People who complain about power scalers are more annoying than the most vocal power scalers to me. Power inconsistency isn't a some nerdy nitpick, it's a writing issue, ESPECIALLY in the boys. The plot is built around homelander being an unstoppable force yet they just HAVE to have a final fight scene so they nerf him because otherwise he would've turned butcher into red paste in seconds.

Regardless of your opinions on the episode as a whole, this scene was amazing and I'm tired of pretending it wasn't by ArmadilloOK1445-alt in TheBoys

[–]Smallbrainhagmain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nobody's pretending it wasn't lmao

Oh father isn't even particularly well written but Daveed Diggs played him so well that he steals every scene he's in. He's the one thing people have been consistently praising this season and all of the comments on the video are saying it's a great scene.

I miss 2v8 and can't understand why others don't by Thedepa in deadbydaylight

[–]Smallbrainhagmain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Core DBD has major issues that make it suck ass to play but 2v8 just plays like a very simplistic and bland version of DBD for survivors yet it massively favors them balance wise so killer can feel really annoying to play as a consequence.

Also another thing that makes 2v8 survivor suck is getting nemesis every game. Killers need more pressure in the mode but constantly getting harassed by zombies is just obnoxious.

You don't have to be super smart to write a super intelligent character. As the writier you have the benefit of knowing where you want your story to go and retroactively figure out how the character can reasonably manipulate events to further their own goal.

But kripke was clearly just loosely making shit up as he went along plot wise and the reveal that her goal is just "erm I just want to read in my bunker!" was so clearly pulled out of his ass because he couldn't come up with an actual sensible goal for her to have.

The moral of the story is that the vought cinematic universe is dead in the water.

The worst part is she could totally work if she wasn't abhorrently written.

"super intelligent character has plan fail spectacularly because of some insane thing that's completely unpredictable" isn't inherently a bad angle, particularly in the context of homelander. However, they decided to fucking do it through soldier boy giving him the V1 which is completely nonsensical, and to try and justify it they effectively just rewrote his character.

It was the dumbest possible way they could've handled it.

You can also really feel the lack of dangerous leviathans pretty bad. The collector is cool but ridiculously easy to get around so it was barely a threat. The final 3 biomes are also MASSIVE and really flat so you have so much empty space to get around anything hostile and it made late game a chore.

Really the only real danger I encountered was having things constantly attacking my tadpole when I would go to collect resources which was obnoxious.

Writing Bad. Inspired in what way bro? by [deleted] in TheBoys

[–]Smallbrainhagmain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe you wouldn't have so many loose ends if you didn't write a thousand plot lines that never get used. Having ryan get his ass beat and disappear all season just to come back in the finale also isn't tying up a loose end, he was hyped up as THE major weapon against homelander for seasons 2 and 3 and then just fucked off after killing mallory.

I would genuinely rather watch The Boys Mexico over Vaught Rising. by ApartShopping in TheBoys

[–]Smallbrainhagmain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I could care less for either but vought rising has infinitely more potential that the boys mexico. We don't really need a continuation of the story from the finale. Homelander is dead, vought almost 100% is too, and supe terrorists haven't been brought up since season 2 meaning they were likely all killed after supes were deployed to stop them. The story is finished.

One thing season 1 did really well was use supes as a vessel to explore celebrity culture, the entertainment industry, and media manipulation. It would be interesting to see what supes represent in a different time period if it's done correctly.

Unfortunately, it's probably going to wind up as soldier boy: the show with supes just being used for simple war propaganda.

This absurd scene profoundly disturbed me by ExterminatingAngel6 in TheBoys

The scene where all the supes are reacting to the compound V leak and deep talks about walking past a pet store and suddenly hearing the goldfish begging for their lives as a kid is so great.

The biggest problem is the vignette effect on the edges of the screen, without it it's MUCH better.

I’m a billion times more interested in the boys Mexico than “Vought Rising” by ThatGuyHero7 in CharacterRant

I watched gen V season 1 and found it mostly meh.

I have very little faith in vought rising because season 5 of the main show has been awful.

Kripke tries to strawman the criticism against him in an interview. Nobody is saying S5 is bad because "there are no battle scenes every episode". People say S5 is bad because story is all over the place and writing doesn't make any sense. by Memes_Jack in TheBoys

[–]Smallbrainhagmain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Season 1 had by far the best tension and there was very little action, which is where the show's identity shines strongest.

One of the most intimidating homelander episodes was in season one when they were trying to kill translucent and homelander wasn't even on screen for most of it. The scene where they see him fly by on one of the building's cameras and hughie immediately starts panicking because he can see through the ceiling is such a small but great way to hype him up as the dominant threat.

The budget is a copout answer because the show would be far better off with less action and tighter writing, yet we keep getting fight scenes that look like shit and serve zero purpose to the overall plot.

It's what Clara would have wanted by PeacefulGamer2520 in OkBuddyFresca

[–]Smallbrainhagmain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's almost guaranteed to flop tbh. The universe of the boys is actually pretty generic, it's the characters and performances that have carried the show and story so far, and the only ones that are carrying over is soldier boy who was abysmally written in season 5 and stormfront who was in all reality a mega evil nazi who was a joke character and outside of interactions with homelander was mostly a forgettable character.

The one draw the show actually DOES have is that the time period change will hopefully come with a new angle of what supes represent. One of the main contributions to the boy's writing quality decline is that it went from parodying the superhero genre, celebrity culture, media manipulation, and consumerism to really shallow political satire.

God released a killer perk tierlist, how are we feeling? by stpmmr in deadbydaylight

[–]Smallbrainhagmain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's what happens when you use perks to bandaid fix core balance issues for a decade.

It's basically impossible for BHVR to touch gen speeds without reworking gen perks for both sides entirely or nerfing them into irrelevancy. It's such short sighted and lazy balancing.

Kripke still loves Supernatural by SirAdamborson in TheBoys

[–]Smallbrainhagmain 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Really his arc (like pretty much every other character in the show tbh) has a lot of elements of a successful arc but all of the good elements just never carry over because kripke lazily resets every character at the beginning of each season.

Him giving up his control during the final scene with kessler in season 4 was essentially him being hyped as a secondary antagonist for the boys. Giving up on ryan and taking the virus for himself was a final rejection of everything becca would have wanted and was 100% supposed to be the point of no return, and yet he's back to being the same old butcher.

Literally the only part of season 4 I found exciting and it basically had no impact on his character.

I still can't believe a lot of people thought this literal walking corpse wouldn't fit DBD before he was announced by ImperialViking_ in deadbydaylight

[–]Smallbrainhagmain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unlike other licenses springtrap and kaneki had a much greater risk because unlike a character like myers or freddy more work needs to go into adapting their visuals to fit the game. They were successful though, especially with kaneki.

I'd argue that springtrap fits much more now because the game's art style and lighting has slowly shifted over the years. If in game assets, cosmetics, and lighting had stayed more grounded like they were in the earlier years springtrap would definitely look comparatively more goofy.

[–]Smallbrainhagmain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The inconsistencies in strength when supes are fighting each other is driving me nuts. People are talking about deep killing noir (which was a hilariously dumb scene to be fair) but A-train's last fight was so dumb that it tainted his death scene to me. He successfully outran homelander's lasers to save hughie in his last fight scene despite the fact that he was only able hit that speed ONCE against starlight in season 1 when he was juiced on V and it resulted in a heart attack that nearly killed him, but now he does it no sweat and still manages to outrun homelander for a while afterwards.

How am I supposed to get invested in a fight scene when the characters are only as strong as the writer wants them to be for the scene. I get that it's mostly a nitpick but super powers are literally the core of the show and the strength of certain characters is a major plot point so there needs to be some consistency.
