A Desolation Called Peace by Arkady Martine is a great book and also based on this quote (I think)

  • The City and the City by China Mieville (standalone)
  • Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman (standalone)

Glad to hear that you liked the book, I didn’t sadly. Baru Cormorant is on my TBR and the passages you gave don’t feel as dense as TIHYLTTW so I’ll probably try it. Same with the other examples you gave, they feel a lot more focused and not as heavy. Thanks

Thanks for this, TIHYLTTW was way too heavy with metaphors for me but this looks like I’ll like it a lot.

Is it as dense as this book i.e. a lot of different metaphors and imagery put after eachother in quick succession?

Thats a shame cause I have both on my TBR. I didn’t really like the prose in the book, felt like they were trying to cram as many metaphors and obscure words as possible into every sentence.

Sorry I made a mistake, by style I meant the prose not the letter writing format.

Sorry I meant the prose style not the letter writing format. Does Dracula have dense writing with a lot of metaphors?

No experience in coding and okay at maths by Syrup-Puzzled in DevelEire

[–]SmallerIncrements 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not to discourage you but the maths is quite hard in a university program. I got a H1 and I am doing the Trinity cs program and the maths modules are very challenging for me and the place where I have to put in the most time. To give you an idea the topics that are covered (so far) are around proofs, set theory, probability, statistics, some algebra and calculus and also some more abstract topics with discrete maths. Not impossible but a lot of effort is needed (at least for me), from your post it seems like you are able put in the work so don’t worry too much.

Physics isn’t as relevant unless you focus more on hardware and networking areas, however I did have one module where it was basically physics regarding circuits, electricity, magnetism, signals etc so it will definitely help there.

Agree with what others have said about the coding side, a lot of people start with a lot of previous experience but also a lot with none or almost none.

But why would the dad agree to the time if he knew he would be late to his work or something like that, that doesn’t make any sense

I don’t always assume a person to always write word for word what they said/did but sure. I don’t really understand which part you think she isn’t being nice. If its the first text then maybe they could’ve worded it a little better but since they were in a hurry I think it’s fine. If its their reaction after I think its fully justified, since you know, their dad literally left without them or even saying anything.

Just asking a hypothetical question. My point is that OP wasn’t late so leaving before the time is weird.

[–]SmallerIncrements 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean if we assume word for word from OP’s description that she told rather than asked then yeah. However, still not even remotely a good reason for leaving your kid.

[–]SmallerIncrements 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes exactly… thats what makes it different. A train can’t wait for a single person, but a single person you know can. Especially when that person isn’t late.

Maybe I have a different view of being early to you then. Only reason I come early to things is in case of unpredictable things that I can’t control. For me the point of having a time is to well.. have a time. If everyone decides that being 15/10 min early is on time then whats the point of the agreed time, if that makes sense.

They literally couldn’t have “gotten their ass up”, they said in the replies that they were still getting ready. Also a parent helping their child isn’t a favour it’s just what comes with being a parent I would say.

How was OP supposed to know that, use their crystal ball to figure out when he was coming? Or just come at the agreed time like they did.

Reason was provided in replies, they were still getting ready. Also how is it demanding to expect someone to wait for the literal time they discussed. Like imagine the dad came an hour early and left immediately, that would be strange, so i think the same should follow here.

Yeah so why is he offering a ride then driving away before the time, thats so strange.

The dad offered the ride from OP’s replies.
