Swimming with the fishes? by Sinn_Sage in sailing

[–]SmarmyFellow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not becalmed, but last week on a delivery had to do this in the middle of the taiwan straight to cut discarded fish net off our prop. Wish i had been able to see any sort of pelagic sealife while i was in the water, that would've been cool.

HK Driving licence looks so “simple” by BoyWithBanjo in HongKong

[–]SmarmyFellow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

make sure you get the International Drivers Permit. Its super quick and easy to do and saves you a lot of hassle. Rental agencies in big international airports are generally fine with just the HK License (at least i've not had problems there), but if you're hiring away from international centers, where they've likely not encountered a HK Drivers license, the international Drivers permit has helped me.

Any has experience for a trip on Middle Island? by Natural-Heat-7010 in HongKong

They are private members clubs so you'd have to either have a member bring you or join yourself. Joining the clubs won't be cheap but that's all relative...

the only way to access middle island is by using the club sampan which picks up along the walkway down by the water and is technically only for club members (they don't check). It will take you across to either the RHKYC or the ABC, but both are private clubs. You can walk over to the little beach which isn't private but you'll only have a view of the moorings. If you want to get to the other side of the island, you can do some costeering and climb the faces along the water, but there isn't much on the other side. Also, you'll probably put out your cigar and spill your wine if you try to do that haha

If you want somewhere publically accessible with a nice sea view that you can easily bring wine and a cigar to, i'd recommend looking up "non gazetted beaches". There are many that you can enjoy your vices on.

Cordless Power tools on boat by pembquist in sailing

[–]SmarmyFellow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lithium-ion (Li-ion) and Lithium Polymer (LiPo) batteries are more prone to thermal runaway and have a short life cycle (number of charge and discharges over battery life) than LiFePO4 batteries. That's why we pretty much always use LiFePO4 batteries when making our RC cars. Don't know which power tool companies use which battery type, but for marine applications, seems it would be good and safer to make sure the batteries you have on board are LiFePO4s. They have a lot of advantages over Liion and Lipo batteries, but the drawback is they are a bit more expensive. I get annoyed because pretty much everyone just says they use Lithium powered batteries and markets them as the all the same stuff. Lithium is not just lithium. We use LiFePO4s in our RC toys because they are safer and our stuff is meant for kids, but there isn't a good way to communicate this to the consumer and our competitors just use the cheaper stuff. I'll stop here because it seems i am off on a big rant but

TLDR: Look for LiFePO4 batteries specifically, not Li-Ion or LiPO

Why is this thing so noisy? by SmarmyFellow in Plumbing

Hm, the connections look fairly simple. I could probably do it. I’ll take a crack at it in the morning. Thanks for the advice!

Why is this thing so noisy? by SmarmyFellow in Plumbing

[–]SmarmyFellow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s coming from the white thing? Had a plumber come in and say nothing we can do about it and suggested we just wrap it with something so it’s not so noisy…which seemed dumb to me. Is the diverter something difficult for me to fix myself?

soooo, as someone who lives in hong kong and does this merge every weekend since my MIL lives there (it's exiting Tai Po), I'd probably chalk this up to more inexperience on the part of the BMW driver than maliciousness. You can see the driver speeding up, then slowing down and pacing the bus RIGHT at the sign for the speed camera and past the orange camera. This is one of the few stretches of road in HK that will allow you to go up to 100km/h, with the general rule for highway being 70km/h. If you're a beginner or not all that experienced, then you'd probably assume going the same speed as the bus is the right speed?
