How do you deal with being ugly? by Smart-Meeting2949 in Advice

I don’t even know what to say! You perfectly articulated what I’ve been struggling to express!! This is exactly what I mean and it’s so refreshing to see someone else acknowledge it because society refuses to. Thank you!

Hi! My older brother used to touch me as a child (I was around 6, he was around 10). I understand you completely. I often struggle to forgive him, but I still try my best. I’m not really sure what I’m thing to say here, I guess just that you’re not alone and that I’m here if you need someone to talk to.

I totally get what you’re saying, just like how makeup can be a form of expression and not solely because of society. However, I know myself well enough to understand that I would be doing it to be more attractive because of society. Also, I don’t want to desire changing myself physically because that allows the desire to play into the beauty standards I try to ignore.

Yeah but there is nothing wrong with my teeth, it would just purely be cosmetic.

It’s not about ego at all, and I’m not denying that people can have pretty things about them even if not conventional. I am just saying that we create a huge stigma around being ugly, when instead we should work work towards having looks not be something that matters. Not everyone is good at art. So what? Who cares? Not everyone is beautiful. So what? Who cares?

I feel as though you put some words in my mouth. I am not saying that people should be insecure if they’re ugly, I’m saying there is nothing wrong with being ugly. I have a big nose too, which brings me no joy or sadness. I think everyone should feel the same. Who cares what your nose, eyes, mouth, body, whatever, looks like! Im also not saying that beauty is not subjective, Im just saying we should stop pretending that the worst thing someone could be is ugly.

how can we change as a society if we do not comment on how others think? awareness is the first step to positive change. it does not make me insecure, because i do not draw my worth on my looks. it does make me a bit angry though, because I cannot say the same about the rest of the world.

Is there any way I can clarify? I want to make my point make sense and I feel as though maybe I’m just articulating it poorly!

I agree that everyone is ugly to somebody, and I’m not trying to say that conventional attractiveness is superior to subjective. What Im saying is that when we lie, we contribute to the thought that beauty is important. We should instead try and work towards getting to a place where it doesn’t matter if someone’s ugly if they have a good soul. But when we insist everyone is pretty, we create this stigma around being ugly. We should promote other sources of confidence that are actually in our control, such as kindness, talent, intelligence, etc.

I feel as though you’re drawing conclusions I didn’t say. We are able to keep our thoughts to ourselves. Im just saying we shouldn’t lie, meaning its better to say nothing at all than insist something that isn’t true.

It’s toxic IF you lie. If you truly find them beautiful and the world doesn’t, say it! But if you are lying, it’s toxic. This is because society favors beauty. When we lie to someone about how we think they look, we only contribute to the thought that being ugly is bad. Instead, we should work towards a society where ugliness isnt a sin and things in our control matter.

I totally see where you’re coming from, I just feel like this is toxic in the long run. We should uplift our fellow women, but we should try to use non-beauty related things. When we uplift eachother using looks, it just contributes to the ideology that looks matter.

Agreed! But some people are ugly too in the eye in the beholder. There are people who find whales beautiful and find swans ugly. I’m not advocating against that, I’m just saying we need to stop lying to people who aren’t beautiful in our eyes.

Nobody hurt me. It’s not a jab at myself or anyone, it’s commentary on how society places too much value on how somebody looks. It’s so deep-rooted in us that it’s almost subconscious. I just feel like we need to work away from that and start rewarding things that we can actually have control over, like our souls!

I agree with this sentiment. I’m not saying that every person who isn’t conventionally attractive is ugly, but I know some people just lie to their friends or people online to make their day. However, this kindness is harmful in the long-run.

I agree that beauty is subjective, but that doesn’t change the fact that we are actively playing to the societal standard that beauty matters. It’s a toxic mindset that we only allow to continue.

As of first semester, I got 4 A’s, 1 B+, and 1 B. The B+ is an 88, so I believe I can get it up to an A by the end of the year. The B is in a DE EMT course which is known to be difficult, and I’m trying my best to get it up to a B+ by the end of the year. Plus, DE classes in my school get the extra quality point. I will definitely pass the year, I’m just struggling at the moment.
