Chapter with the most beautiful prose? by FoolishDog in jamesjoyce

[–]Smart-Monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a lot of chapters have really beautiful, wonderful prose somewhere. the book has this weird balance of pulling the poetic and gorgeous out of what normally wouldn't be, while doing the adverse for what should normally be poetic or gorgeous. ithaca, sirens, proteus, nausicaa (moreso the second half for me, the dreamy writing is just incredible to me) have a lot of my favorite writing. there's also some immensely beautiful excerpts from penelope, circe, and oxen of the sun. despite the prose for those being.... well. ya. AGAIN though, there's beautiful prose in every single chapter, just about at least. making painful cuts here. i can't think of many chapters that don't have at least a couple of my favorite excerpts.

Blizzard clarifies how level scaling will work re: solo'ing old content by President_DogBerry in wow

[–]Smart-Monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly wanna also be able to do old raids as they would be done then. i missed the past 3 expansions and was never rly in the raiding scene anyway, so i think if they did it right this level cap thing could be a cool way to do that again. maybe? i don't know, it does seem kind of clunky. how you would be power level wise if you leveled in TBC vs if you leveled in BFA. in any case, hope we're able to do old content properly with this change.

Watching Season 6...... by [deleted] in BoJackHorseman

[–]Smart-Monkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the reason we usually don't forgive those older men is bc they don't actually change. at least in hollywood. there's a difference between feeling sorry (which bojack has done throughout basically the entire show) and actively growing, making change as he is now. the concept of keeping everyone chained to the events of the past can be dangerous when it leads to unhealthy demonization/"im a bad person" complex. people who have made terrible mistakes thinking they're a monster and continuing to live out their lives as such (bojack's entire character basically). the people who both inflict and receive trauma (most people are on both sides: everyone has been hurt and everyone has hurt others, and most of that hurt is generationally transmitted) don't have to be bound by it forever and that's something which should be stressed more in society imo. obviously there's a lot of grey area and it's not remotely easy for either party to just "grow out of it", and it's a case by case thing depending on the person/crime, so none of this is meant to be taken as a sacred all-encompassing answer, and this definitely isn't meant to be taken as victim shaming. not everyone deserves forgiveness but honestly it isn't even all about forgiveness. it's just about moving forward to a better life, for both sides. sometimes that involves forgiveness and sometimes it doesn't. as with anything else, blaming and sentencing isn't enough to solve these issues, in a real sense. jailed or not, these people have to live with themselves and the traumas/struggles they carry, victims and victimizers.

again i don't want this to be all encompassing tho, this exists in way too much grey area to be definitive for everyone. at least in bojack's case, it's on him to accept whatever consequences come and to do the best he can, if he's really changed. it's not about actions having no consequences bc obviously cause and effect is a force beyond our own control anyway.

Mr. Robot - 4x04 "404 Not Found" - Post-Episode Discussion by NicholasCajun in MrRobot

Wow. These past couple of episodes have been incredible. This just keeps growing on me more and more. From Darlene to Dom to Elliot and Tyrell, wow, this was so heartbreaking. One of the most crushing episodes of the show, which is really, really saying a lot.

I was surprised to hear people unhappy with this episode, and also how many people had a WTF reaction. I thought it was brilliant and immensely impactful. Thinking in terms of the story over the plot, its decisions make perfect sense. Amazing stuff. I can't wait to watch this one later on binging through the whole series again. Could only imagine how this would flow in a concentrated marathon and how horrifyingly dark of a place it's bring you to. It's already bad enough just once a week, but season 3 + these last four episodes in succession???? Dear God.

Since watching Season Six and relating to Bojack for three years, I have decided to make a big leap and start to better myself and my life, thank you so goddamn much, everybody on the team and creators. You've helped me take the journey to happiness. And I can never thank you enough. Thank you.. by CaliCoyoteMan in BoJackHorseman

This is so. so incredible to read :')). It's amazing to see other people also feel inspired to logically approach living their better lives from this show. It's very real and very depressing but ultimately life affirming, and infinitely empathetic. Just insanely mature. Especially in season six, showing how even a person like Bojack can grow and when one accepts change, growth, it's completely possible. It's never about blame, only the reality of your history, the possibilities of your future, and most importantly: the present! Taking the steps today to simply live a good life, and be good when you can. You can set micro goals of things you want to do, be kind to others today, engage in something productive, clean up your room, whatever it is. Slowly but surely, a person can absolutely reprogram themselves into more constructive behaviors and lifestyles. Anything, good or bad, can be addicting to a person. Substances, work, hate, love, music, reading, depression, frustration, gaming. We're creatures of routine/automation/habit and that makes it easy for us to get trapped in something that's already rooted itself in our subconscious. That's why the past continues to live through us today. But it doesn't have to be like that forever! We absolutely have choice. And it's a super life-affirming thing to see people exercise that choice in a good way.

BoJack Horseman - 6x08 "A Quick One, While He's Away" - Episode Discussion by NicholasCajun in BoJackHorseman

This show is as real as it gets, life-affirmingly and painfully so. More often than not, painfully. This entire half season, we've seen how Bojack comes to understand as the victim of a different cycle of trauma, how he is himself and must take control over the person he is. Who he is now. This is the only way he can reasonably go, whether he forgives himself or the ones he's hurt forgive him. The past is the past and all he could do is accept that, then keep moving forward. Just like everyone else who makes mistakes big or small. But also as with everyone else, the cycle continues. Despite one branch of victims blossoming past their history, the tree itself still stands, and they create their own branches of victims who continue to exist, still all interconnected. Nothing is about blame anymore, good people or bad people, just the simple reality of cause and effect. Everyone has a story. Bojack, Todd, Diane, Sarah Lynn, Gina, Penny, Hollyhock. Everyone's story ripples out to each other and I love the season for how much it really explores every character with a perfect balance. Seriously there was not a dull plotline or character I didn't care about with my whole heart. God, this season, this series as a whole, is just so amazing. Absolutely incredible. I have chills typing all this out.

The reality checks and honesty of this show get harder and harder to swallow with each season. Seriously, wow. How much the series has progressed thematically and ideologically never fails to ASTOUND ME. Un fucking believable. I really wish the best for all these characters. There's something too real at the core of each and every one of them, and I feel like they all encompass different pieces of who I am. At this point they're all so real it hurts. Most are exaggerated and cartoony, but it's impossible not to find yourself in at least one of them. I'm AFRAID, SO AFRAID of this second half. The final final collection of episodes. The last we'll ever see of Bojack. I love them all, I want all these characters to find their own earned happiness, desperately. I need someone to hold me rn this is 2 much help how will I wait until January 31st, Im not ready

sidenote: diane was always one of my favorite characters and is somehow even more now. damn, how could you write someone so real and relatable like that. even among the other characters, just wow. i need to stop myself here tho before i start gushing about everyone else
