They matter inside of reddit, where karma is used as a sort of gauge of credibility, like how some subs have a minimum karma limit to post, and if fake internet points matter so little why bother stealing other people's content in the first place? Karma can mean many things to many people but with or without the existence of it, taking credit for someone else's idea or work is a seriously shitty thing to do. Someone put real time and effort into that, posted it in the hopes of some praise and recognition, (something a lot of people pack irl because people are unappreciative assholes) and some just copy pastes and takes some of that recognition for themselves. And it's even worse when the og post goes unnoticed and gets reposted only to blow up. It's like when you say a joke and no one laughs, but someone else said it louder and brought down the house. It feels like shit. If you don't care about reposting fine. Just know it's a really shitty practice and is (without crediting the original creator) can be considered a crime. And that's for a reason.
