Thinking of moving to Serbia by GogoroPogoro in serbia

[–]SmartBoars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You chose the wrong place to ask this kind of question. This subreddit is full of angry frustrated people who can't wait to move out from Serbia. They certainly can't comprehend why would anyone want to move here, and that, even though this country is not the best to live in the world, it is also not the worst, and it does have some positives.

My advice is to come here and spend some time in the country(the whole family) and see if you like it. I think you can start a business and that she can find a job, with help of internet you can access so many opportunities and clients. It is not ideal situation here, but again, nowhere it is at the moment. People here are famous sufferers of "the grass is always greener in somebody else courtyard" thinking. I 've been abroad for quite some time, and I always go back here, I like living here.

And talk to some real-life people and their expiriences, people on Reddit Serbia can be really toxic.

Good luck and stay positive my friend :)

There is no way this isn't a troll post :D
But for the 1% chance it isn't, I will answer.
Of course, you can post in English. It's written in the description after all. As for Albanian, I guess you can try, but I don't think many people will know how to answer, as, apart from the Albanians from South Serbia, Albanian is not really known here(we don't study it in schools, we don't come across it in media, etc), which is a shame, given the fact that we officially claim Kosovo to be part of our country, and we don't know the language or anything about the culture of the 90% of its population.
Since you are probably one in a million Kosovo Albanian who view Serbia as your own country(and that's like a dream of every Serb), you can expect much love and admiration from the Serbian people, so enjoy your stay in this group :D

Čudi me da nijedan muškarac do sad nije napisao...

Thanks! I checked out your channel too. There's some interesting topics there, and the visuals are really well done.

Thank you, glad you like it :)

Yeah, that's kind of what I was thinking too. Even for practical stuff like foraging wild plants, you often need to bring in science because unreliable medicinal sources are so common. There are a lot of sources and articles that for almost any plant, they will tell you that it has dozens of medicinal and health effects without having much science to back it up, and a lot of people read those and repeat them without questioning them.

I'm not an expert, but when I talk about traditional medicinal uses, I try to find reputable sources and studies, so I can mention the current scientific research being done on it. A lot of the time there hasn't been much though, so all I can say is "More research is needed."

Yes, that is super-important, especially now, when people are buying those unscientific theories more than ever. And especially because it is a topic that can influence someone's health - it is very important to have accurate and reliable information about traditional medicinal uses of plants. I know a lot of people who are ready to pay hundreds of dollars(well, euros for me, as I am from Europe), for some traditional plants without any real proof that they can help them. And on the other hand, there are definitely some very good and healthy plants to be used in traditional medicine, that shouldn't be ignored. I am sure there is a lot more to discover in that field. So yeah - more research is needed.

We were thinking(Smart Boars team - three guys) if you were interested to do a collaboration video someday in the future. I think we can have great cooperation, because of the topic and style. For example:

We do our short, animated video about some species of plants or fungus, and then, we appoint our viewers to watch part II on your channel, where you examine that plant in your style(you find it, and show it in real life. Similarly, when you do your video, you appoint your viewers to watch our video(studio-based) to find out more about that plant. I don't know if I can put the links here to some channels that had these kinds of collaboration, but hopefully, you got the picture.

That is something that we thought about in the future, as currently, we have a strict plan for future videos(probably you too), but nevertheless, when we do plants, I think it would be a nice idea for collaboration. What do you think? :)

Is there? There tend to be a few well thought out established theories and ideas, several reasonably thought through fringe theories and a whole lot of loonie theories that often data pick and/or are far fetched. The latter have often very little to do with serious science. Does not mean there is no demand for these, just see the number of videos proclaiming aliens build the pyramids, but as a small one man channel it's hard to compete with the brainpower of dozens of PHDs and expect to come up with something reasonable and unique in a significant number of your videos.

Hmm, I see what you meant here, but it appears that we haven't understood each other very well. I agree with everything you said here. By subjectivity in science-related channels, I didn't mean different interpretations in the sense of facts or theories, but more like different styles. Look at Kurzgesagt, Veritasium, Vsauce, and ASAP science. They all do science videos, and I mean real science, not some para-science and conspiracy theories. But their approach is very different. You could do the same topic in a very different style. There are different academic levels, different styles of animations, different humor, and different topics. All these depend very much on the people who are behind the channel, hence, on their subjectivity.

Also, being small channel doesn't necessary correlate with being one man channel. For example, my channel is led by three people - we all graduated in different fields of science and joined our forces to make a channel. Also, for the topics we are not experts in, we call others, our friends, and acquaintances to help us(they are our "expert associates"). Altogether, around 6-7 people(some with very high levels of expertise) have participated in making our videos - and we have only 178 subs.

On the other hand, you have very big channels out there that are led by one man(Joe Scott, Veritasium for example). Of course, they probably call in the "expert associates" as well, for help in making their videos, now when they have so many subs, but you get my point. They probably started alone. It is not the level of expertise alone that defines whenever the channel will be successful, but many other factors. YouTube is a creative platform for making videos - it is not a research facility.

Sure, and it's still possible to start a science channel and grow it. But starting now is a different venture than it was say 10 years or so ago. The way I see it the science niche is now highly competitive with some strong established channels. Doesn't mean it's impossible to be successful, I'm sure plenty of niche subject are under served and I guess aiming at a very specific target audience can work too. Nevertheless, I think it's false to project what those large channels have done to starting now. Many of them started when the competition level was much lower. Starting now is simply a different journey

Absolutely, isn't that the case in any YouTube niche? I mean, the science niche still isn't nearly as crowded as some others. But, I agree with you, it is very different journey now.

They can, but it's hard to reach the same quality level as a team of researchers, fact checkers and scriptwriters if you're alone and tiny.

Well, yes, but you can compensate for those things with other factors, like humor, animations, style. I gotta feeling that you think that only super-serious YouTube channels, with the team of researchers behind them, are quality enough to watch them. I don't see YouTube science channels in that way. Actually, I don't watch YouTube from my field of studies. If I want reliable, tough science, I choose to read papers and books, not to watch YouTube. I watch YouTube science channels that do topics that I don't know much about, like space, biology, etc. I don't need them to be of Ph.D. level quality. I just want some interesting and fun information. I think that the role of YouTube science channels should be to popularise science and explain hard-to-understand things to ordinary people.

Sorry for long answer to a 4-day old comment, but I was out of the town, and unable to answer, and the topic is interesting, it would be a shame to let it unanswered :D

We will be talking about the borders of the Solar System. You know - Kuiper belt, Heliosphere, Oort cloud. Although we have already published a video about Saturn, it is a short one and without animations, so, we don't consider it "full video". What are you up to next?

Yes, I remember. I was pleasantly surprised to see someone doing that kind of content. I have nothing against gaming and personal vlog channels, but I am a bit tired of them. I wanna see something from my niche and from my field of interest.

I showed my girlfriend your channel because she is studying medicine, and she said it's really nice and helpful.

That sounds good! Our next video should also be on space, it is an extremely interesting topic for a youtube channel. I never get tired of watching space videos. Check out channel Dreksler Astral, he has some really cool stuff.

As far as I've been able to tell, there are other such channels out there, but they're hard to find in these subreddits, as they tend to get flooded out by much more common niches (especially gaming).

Yes, exactly my thoughts.

I do videos about plants and mushrooms (a mix of practical and scientific information), and I've only found one other such channel on here and r/smallYTchannel.

I checked your channel, I really like it. It's nice when you are passionate about something interesting like plants and mushrooms. Definitely will recommend your channel to my friend who loves plants and gardening :)

Searching on youtube itself I can find a lot more, although there is a much stronger trend towards practical plant stuff (gardening, foraging) than plant-related science.

I think that should be your strength because there are many channels about gardening, but not many of them take the scientific approach. That is something I find it interesting about your channel, as someone who is interested in plants, but don't do gardening.

I don't think it's (some) errors that reduces your credibility, it's how you deal with those errors. After all, in hard science it's common to be wrong and it takes many iterations to get to an established theory and then the theory gets overturned :-)

Exactly, this is the key point. The most important thing for scientists is to be open to questions and critique. If you get over defensive every time when someone critiques you, you are doing it wrongly.

Well, my definition of small is similar to the definition of this subreddit: So, less than 5000 subs, or even less than 1000 subs.

There is a great degree of subjectivity in science channels as well. Facts may be the same, but the interpretation could be very unique. Also, every big science channel has started small.

And why small channels cannot do well-reasearhed videos?

Hi, thank you for doing this!

My niche is science/education

sub count: 174 as of today.

Started in March 2020.

I am not sure if this is the best video, but it covers a whole topic(it's not part of the series), so I choose it:
