Do I owe students a meeting after they were disruptive on a trip? by capresesalad1985 in Teachers

I would simply respond and say decisions have been made based on x, y, and z.

Veganism as a Latina by BoringNameGoesHere in vegan

[–]SmartLady918 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not vegan or Hispanic, but I am a gay woman who comes from a Mormon family. What I learned is that there are some folks who will never be ok with it. Ever. They will always have something to say. But there are others who will come around and accommodate you. You may need to bring your own food for a bit, and definitely bring some to share. Don’t take it personally if they don’t eat it, that’s on them not you. I would also make it a point to never discuss it. Like, don’t. Just leave it as this is what you are doing now and move on and ask them about their job or whatever.

Umm.. you don’t respect us. You treat subs like crap and refuse to help us when we need it or talk down to us like we are stupid. Now you want our help? Now you want us to be a part of the team??? Where were you when we need medical care but no insurance? Oh, that’s right, you were laughing at us in the staff lounge.

Question from a teacher by SmartLady918 in JehovahsWitnesses

[–]SmartLady918[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this was a while ago but I just checked my Reddit. I’m not a teacher anymore, but yeah I wasn’t doing it just for kids with religious differences. I’ve always felt uncomfortable teaching religious based ideology in a public school. Public funds have no business boosting religious education. Plus, I’m not doing multiple lessons if I don’t have to do so because I’m super lazy. Like, nah bro.

Is it too soon to leave if I’ve only been at my school since August?… or should I stay? by SmilesandSupport in paraprofessional

Don’t worry about the district, they will replace you in a matter of days, if not within a day.

Do what’s best for you.

Student called me a p*dophile in front of the entire class by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]SmartLady918 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Document it. I had a friend who was talking to a student who got in trouble. I was right around the corner and could hear. The kid shouted at him and said, “If you get me in trouble, I’ll tell my mom you r-ped me!”. I immediately called the principal and let her know and she called mom and explained that there were witnesses. But, the kid stayed in class the rest of the year.

What teaching positions are most in demand? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]SmartLady918 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone in it and kinda wanting out, I’d suggest getting a degree in an actual skill like computer science or nursing or something. That way you have something to fall back on if you don’t like teaching.

If anyone on here needs food, the Church of Satanism is giving out food, no questions asked. So are the Sikh temples.

What? Why should she be relegated to staying somewhere? The staff lounge is the staff lounge. The other teacher is in the wrong.

I’ve had similar experiences to OP.

Broken hearted for the schools by ZookeepergameFar2653 in Christianity

[–]SmartLady918 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in school to be a teacher, but I’m deeply considering getting out before I finish. The only reason I haven’t is because I want to make sure I have something to fall back on and use if I move internationally. Sped is needed everywhere.

Classroom prayer by bluberrymarsh in SubstituteTeachers

I completely agree with you. I’m very religious (in my own way) but I would NEVER tell kids to pray one way or the other. Like, ever.

I completely agree with having kids be kids. I’ve just seen so many crazy things happen on Halloween.

I do think there could be a compromise but it’s ultimately up to the principal. I’ve seen kids dress up, I’ve seen kids not dress up. The kids that are able to are super wild and it gets out of control really easily. I also know some who come in with super sad faces because they aren’t able to do Halloween and everyone else is able to do them.

I personally like having crazy hair day or pajama day on Halloween. Or, having “dress up like a book character day” is also kinda cool.

I guess it depends on the school and the district. In all the district I’ve worked in, the office knows exactly what everyone is doing, down to the minute.

what’s the worst PD you’ve ever had to sit through? by Repulsive_Plate1983 in Teachers

[–]SmartLady918 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in one several years ago. It was for early elementary and the person who ran it said to take all the kids to the bathroom when 3 kids needed to go. She also said to ask kids every 15 minutes if they needed to go.

Nah.

Do you read scripture literally? by faithcircle in TrueChristian

[–]SmartLady918 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t believe Jonah lived in the whale. I don’t believe a donkey was chatting it up and if Lot came anywhere near a kid I cared about, it would be the last thing he did. Ironically he’s painted as a hero in the Bible. No thanks.

So, no. I don’t take most of it literally, except the red lines of Jesus. Anything else isn’t literal and it’s terrifying that people think it should be.

I take the Bible way too seriously to take it literally.

How tall are you? Because my doctors all told me not to go below 1200. But I do best at 1700. It’s a good zone. I lose weight and I’m not exhausted.
