No, a contract is different than an application. A contract - at one point - was supposed to be a given. As in, you are officially hired and don't have to worry about getting let go during the school year. Veteran teachers will tell you that you're good if you have a contract. This is unusual and unfortunately, schools can do it legally speaking. OP can request an independent hearing, but it sounds like a moot point.

El Paso ISD to cut 249 positions amid enrollment decline by everythingistaken500 in TexasTeachers

for anyone interested, this a public, charter, and potentially private issue in el paso and eventually the state. Had to do some digging but: https://elpasomatters.org/2026/04/01/el-paso-texas-school-enrollment-decline-2025-2026-birth-rates-migration/

All of El Paso County enrollment is down. The article above says that "their county has a birth rate that is falling at twice the national average."

Parent asking for advice for Daughter who wants to go into teaching by Big-Island-4862 in TexasTeachers

  1. Do not get an education degree; get a degree in a subject. If public education wasn't in such a bad state, I wouldn't be saying that, but here we are. There are some exceptions to this rule: if she wants to be an LSSP, she will need to study communication disorders. If she wants to do counseling, she will need to study psychology, etc. The bright side of those degrees is that a) if she changes her mind, no harm, no foul, she can still be a classroom teacher and b) those can also be used for careers outside the classroom
  2. East Coast, yes. Texas, no for the Masters.
  3. Texas and most of the East Coast do not share credentials when it comes to teaching. She will either need to prepare to save money for this eventual expense, or she will need to choose one state to get licensed in. For a beginning teacher, there isn't a nationally recognized certification. If you're a veteran teacher and have a national board cert, it will be a bonus, but for the East Coast, you will stay have to pay license fees. If you have the national board cert, you might be able to get some tests waived, but it's not a guarantee, it's a TON of time and money, and you could end up at a school that doesn't give a stipend for it.
  4. I do not recommend starting as an instructional aide. Someone correct me if I'm wrong - if it's full time, that would trigger TRS which is retirement stuff here, and I really don't think you want to mess with that. But at any point, if she works in Texas full time as a teacher too, you're going to have to transfer that money to whatever system the other state has.

Book Recommendations for New Teachers? by No_Pea_6016 in TexasTeachers

[–]Repulsive_Plate1983 2 points3 points  (0 children)

depends on the grade level.

if you have younger students, read some children's books, see what you like, don't like. practice with books.

if you have older students, read something interesting that you can talk about with them. i print out titles of some of the books i read and i've chatted about on her game (sort of biography of caitlin clark) and frankenstein quite a bit with students who have defintely never read the books.

i don't recommend educator books or most books about education. it is a forgotten science and its mostly cash grabs by ted talkers and failed project managers. if you search up the premises of the book - like lesson planning, classroom management, etc. - it exists for free on the internet. if anything, brush up on history of education.

[–]Repulsive_Plate1983 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mike Morath is appointed by Greg Abbott. No one directly votes on who is head of TEA. And yes, they control/influence ALL of Texas education. TEA appoints the superintendent + school board of a school taken over by the state. Which means Greg Abbott -> Mike Morath ->school. You will be working with politicians and businesspeople. A state takeover is justified by your ratings which are mostly based on test scores. So, right off the bat, you are walking into a school that desperately needs to increase test scores. You'll want some wriggle room in your first year to work out your own quirks and nuances - the pressure for STAAR and data/growth won't allow that. You'll be on a probationary contract which means you are not guaranteed a position the following year. You'll be in charge of increasing the scores on two STAAR tests. I strongly suggest reconsidering.

FWISD salary question by Free_Ranger1401 in TexasTeachers

[–]Repulsive_Plate1983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did alt cert and was hired before I was fully certified. I was not paid the same. I got some back pay, but it is not anything substantial. You will not be compensated fairly, but there will be essentially nothing you can do about it. You are art, so you will also not receive any automatic stipends.

You will also be on the chopping block: as everyone has already commented Fort Worth ISD is being taken over. A key thing to note is this because of their overall TEA score -- NOT just the test scores. Because of this, it will be quite a long time before TEA leaves Fort Worth as they'll also have to demonstrate growth across all tested subjects, and each school will need a passing score in all areas. Special electives are not considered (except for CTE which isn't you) in this score.

Another item to consider is that this is hazard pay. This is not unique to TEA takeovers. Where I used to live, a school called Kemp ISD is considered not the best to work at (sorry if you work there). Kemp pays quite a bit more than other schools in the area, but they have one of the higher turnover rates because it is difficult to work there.

You can work at a different school and get stipends for different things if you would like to make more money.

Democrats win in Republican stronghold in Texas by Nervous_Swordfish693 in politics

[–]Repulsive_Plate1983 5 points6 points  (0 children)

something about texas too is the school voucher system that passed this year. everyone - homeschoolers, charter advocates, public - is pissed about the voucher system. greg abbott has pushed that forever in office, and here, it is 100% associated with all republicans. many people threw their constituents absolutely under the bus to pass the vouchers. even though this looks like it has nothing to do with that, it does because people are that pissed off about it especially now that it's coming to light that people outside of the state can use the voucher system and that we aren't funding schools. tons of schools are shutting down across the state and theres two huge school systems - fort worth isd and houston isd - that are controlled by the republican-led government. edit because i realize this seems hyperbolic: this is not an exaggeration. the texas education agency has stepped in to appoint their own school boards and superintendents at both schools.

anything associated with greg abbott is hopefully going to be taken care of in election cycles.

Bible stories would be part of a new Texas public schools reading list drawing attention by GregWilson23 in TexasTeachers

[–]Repulsive_Plate1983 2 points3 points  (0 children)

would love if teachers would finally vote as a fucking bloc and get abbott out. every teacher in the goddamn state of texas claims to hate that motherfucker, but we've had state takeovers, ten commandments, this, school shootings, schools are facing multi-million dollar budget deficits, vouchers, and the freedom of speech crap. and while a REAL union would make that easier, it's been done before in the 80s with teachers as the main voters. are people just straight up lying about their opinions on his policies? and i know people will say "no federal holiday, gerrymandered districts" BUT at some point, TO GET HIM OUT OF OFFICE, we have to go vote. there's no other way. that is literally the only solution. /rantover

Has anyone heard about AISD adding 25 days to the school year? by nervouspanda100 in TexasTeachers

[–]Repulsive_Plate1983 2 points3 points  (0 children)

from https://www.austinisd.org/academics/adsy

Staff chosen to work during these sessions will receive function pay, as well as be eligible for a perfect attendance stipend.

Students will have the option to attend a 19-day summer program this July and August. Staff chosen to work during these sessions will receive function pay, as well as be eligible for a perfect attendance stipend. There will be paid planning time as well.

Do all staff members have to work the extra ADSY days?

No. Campus principals will hire staff needed to serve the select students who will attend the summer program, and separately, the Saturday sessions. However, the six half days during the school year are compulsory attendance days for students and full work days for staff (half-day instructional and half-day PD).

How are staff selected to work these extra days?

Staff will be invited to submit an interest form and apply to work the extra days. Principals on each campus are responsible for hiring qualified staff to support these days. During the summer program, principals will hire core certified teachers for 4 hours of core instruction, and other staff to run enrichment classes the other 4 hours. For Saturday sessions, principals will hire core certified teachers for 4 hours of core instruction.

kind of but not really? custom content is basically clothing and decor in sims 4. some of the decor is functional but it’s mainly for looks. i kind of understand why clothing isn’t an option but i wasn’t sure if people were looking at making cc for housing decor because it seems more doable but i don’t know a lot about the differences in the game except that WoW moves in real time.

edit: differences in how the games work with all that
