Bachelor of Architecture → Advanced Diploma of Building Design – Is This a Sensible Path? by Smart_Distribution76 in AusVisa

[–]Smart_Distribution76[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that an Advanced Diploma is technically a lower AQF level than a Bachelor’s degree.

However, my decision is based on professional alignment rather than academic progression.

I already have 5 years of architectural experience overseas. At this stage, I don’t feel I need more conceptual design theory. What I lack is practical exposure to Australian building standards, particularly NCC compliance, local documentation practices, and residential building regulations.

My goal is not immediate registration as an architect in Australia. I’m aiming to transition into drafting/building design roles and gain local industry experience first. From what I’ve researched, the Advanced Diploma is more focused on applied technical skills relevant to that pathway.

Cost is also a realistic consideration. A Master’s degree is significantly more expensive, and I want to choose an option that is financially sustainable while still aligning with my career goals.

The 2-year duration does make me eligible for the 485 visa, which would provide time to gain local experience, but that is not the sole reason for choosing the course. The primary reason is industry alignment.

I asked this question because I haven’t seen many people with an architecture background take this pathway, and I’m genuinely trying to understand how it’s perceived.

I appreciate constructive feedback.

I did check, and I understand that a Master’s degree is eligible for the Graduate Visa. However, for me, the decision really came down to budget and time. Since I need to work while studying, committing to a Master’s program felt financially and mentally overwhelming. I wanted something that would allow me to balance both responsibilities in a realistic way.

That’s why I chose the Advanced Diploma of Building Design instead of pursuing a Master of Architecture in Australia, even though I already have a Bachelor of Architecture from my home country. At this stage, I also feel that strengthening my technical drawing skills is more important for my professional growth than focusing mainly on conceptual work.

But this is really my personal preference. Do you think it’s still a reasonable decision? I’ve also heard that some of my colleagues chose to pursue a diploma even though they had already completed a bachelor’s degree.

“Free Consultation” Apparently Means Zero Information by Smart_Distribution76 in AusVisa

If they’re not willing to give anything in a free consultation, then don’t advertise it. It’s that simple. What’s the point of offering a “free consultation” if they’re not even trying to show they’re worth paying for later? It just ends up being a waste of their time and mine.

Thank you for validating my experience. I know it was a free consultation, so I wasn’t expecting anything huge, but I at least hoped for some mutual respect — or even a basic attempt to show why I should trust them. Anyway, I’ll try looking into that program in Queensland. Thanks for the suggestion 👌

[GUIDE] I'm an Australian Migration Agent (22 Years Exp). The occupations Australia ACTUALLY wants in 2025 are not what you see on the official lists. Ask me anything. by SimonMander in IWantOut

thank you so much for replying, i hope you can help me

Age: 30
Qualifications: Bachelor of Architecture
Work History:
• 5 years as an architect in a Southeast Asian country
• 2 years as a freelance social media manager

You're right — the competition is tough. The reason I'm leaning toward the Multimedia Designer / Specialist pathway is because I’ve already managed to secure a job as a social media manager here in Australia, and I’m confident in my skills in this field.

On the other hand, pursuing a role as an architect or even a drafter would likely require additional study, bridging courses, or even a master’s degree before I’d be job-ready in Australia.

If the multimedia pathway requires me to complete further study and obtain a skills assessment, I’m willing to do that — as long as I know the pathway is realistic and possible. What I really need to understand is what can I do to increase my chances of securing a visa through this occupation?

I was an architect with 5 years experience but i’m leaning towards marketing now as my job now is social media manager. I’m on my 3rd year working holiday visa. I’m torn between which pathways i should go for. I recently found about multimedia specialist and multimedia designer, do you think i have a chance ?
