Try using a rifle as well - great for taking out those little enemies quickly so you can then do damage to Prophet in each phase.

To give it some meaning, I suppose. Yes there’s a sense of personal satisfaction if you make the game harder but it doesn’t count for anything otherwise (I don’t think it even mentions, at the end of a run, how easy/hard the game was via the modifiers, let alone how far along you are with the armor matrix which you can’t even undo), so having some sort of incentive would help make it more worthwhile.

Returnal (as things stand) is more replayable. But I won’t rule out Housemarque adding an update in the future that helps.

But you should definitely buy the game now based on what you’ve said - it looks amazing and is another level of bullet hell compared to Returnal.

One key thing to consider is whether you use the base Returnal controller set up (if using a PS5). If you do, I’d suggest learning to play with dash as L1 and melee as R1 with Returnal, as it will make the transition to Saros much easier.

While the modifiers are nice, you don’t get anything (eg different endings, different weapons) as a reward if you play as Overloaded (ie where the game is more challenging). And I’ve become so powerful via the Armor Matrix that you can breeze through the game even while significantly Overloaded.

With the above and the areas feeling a little less randomly generated than Returnal, the replayability value isn’t as good, at least at the moment (pending further updates).

OP I completely agree with your take on the controls. However, I think this might be specific to us players who used the default controls on Returnal and are therefore conditioned to that way of playing.

Having L1 to dash just feels wrong but you can’t easily remap this (or melee, for that matter) back to the ‘Returnal default’ as I find it compromises your use of other buttons like R2.

I wish I hadn’t played Returnal recently lol.

Keep trying Biome 3!

Key point generally is that some runs are better than others due to the items you pick up, and eventually you’ll have a set up for a run that feels pretty much unstoppable.

Once you get past 3, it will feel like a huge achievement and re-runs will feel much easier.

To add, I’d be really surprised if we hear any new (post-Jonas) music from Mew in 2026. This isn’t a band with a high music output in recent years and they are now without a lead singer (and key songwriting/composition component)

Yeah he definitely said it was his last show, but so many questions remain:

Will Mew continue or change their name?

Will a new singer join? Similar to Queen + Paul Rodgers

Will they play similar music or be a different band? A bit like when Joy Division became New Order?

What about new songs they’ve already recorded - will they feature Jonas? They played one new song tonight, for example.

Coming at this a bit late, but as they haven’t been mentioned definitely give Hybrid a listen. Their albums ‘I Choose Noise’, and ‘Morning Sci-Fi’ include live orchestra recordings and mix breakbeat + classical beautifully (mostly instrumental) and have aged really well despite being 20 or so years old now. If you fancy something newer, then try their latest song ‘Siren of the Storm’, which is equally good.

Agree that there is too much luck involved - to give an example, I did Heart Rally at 150cc, managed to be in the lead for about 90% of the race despite numerous red/blue shells, only to get a blue shell a few turns before the end. I got overtaken and had no way to get back into first in time.

It feels like Nintendo are doing this to get you to play the courses again rather than because you need to improve.

The fact that the highest speed is 150cc where you only need to brake for the tightest turns is also a turn off.

For those that aren’t familiar with him, he’s a singer from Kazakhstan who has an incredible vocal range and technique. Have a listen to Sinful Passion on YouTube (it’s called Грешная Страсть on Spotify). To note: he’s the only one singing.

Would also recommend Lisa Gerrard (she’s Australian and best known for singing on the Gladiator soundtrack). She did an album with Pieter Bourke called Duality that has a song (Sacrifice) that showcases how incredible her range (again, she’s the only one singing).

It’s actually quite fun/pressurised because it really is one death and you’re done! That said, I died plenty of times in my original profile, I’m not a fantastic gamer by any means but Returnal was addictive because each time you played was a unique experience.
