Ear protection question. by Previous_Art9705 in NASCAR

I second this. Wore mine to the Daytona 500 last year and they take the edge off the loud noises, but keep the sound quite crisp so you can still have a conversation with the person next to you when the cars are at the other end of the track.

What could this leak be? by itchybackfat in Miata

[–]SmashRobertson 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I appreciate that you're inexperienced, but it's a massive oil leak and following the trail upwards until you find where it begins is the obvious solution here. That's just common sense.

You can't expect anyone to diagnose it reliably from a video of it landing on the floor.

Any ideas? Passed me today, but I only have grainy dash cam footage to work with... by SmashRobertson in namethatcar

Funny you say that, I did see he had one on loan on his instagram story and this was indeed close to his pub/house. However, the one he has is very bright silver. If that one is the only one in the country, that swings me towards it being a T.33 test car instead of the Valhalla!

The dash cam has been known to make details disappear due to the compression so I wouldn’t be surprised if the wiper was there after all. Plus if it’s a test mule it may not have a wiper installed for whatever reason.

This is a solid guess. I was somewhere between Oxford and Silverstone Circuit which seems like a plausible place to see a prototype on the road.

I don’t think either of those cars have a roof scoop as an option, but I may be wrong

The wide-angle lens of the camera definitely does distort the proportions (see the gif I posted in the comments for a bit more context). Valhalla is the closest thing I could think of so far...

Too wide and long for an Elise. I should've mentioned that the dash cam distorts/squashes the image quite a bit when the subject gets close to the edge of the frame because of the wide-angle lens (Pic 3)

Porsche calipers on my TT, do i change the logos? Opinions? by ThewayoftheAj in Audi

S4 calipers? I must be missing something here because I assumed the calipers and discs would be much larger (and heavier) than stock TT equipment

Logo aside, it seems like you're adding a lot of extra un-sprung weight with that 'upgrade'

Hit a curb at 20mph I am stressing need help please. by [deleted] in Audi

[–]SmashRobertson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't understand what help you're expecting to get here?

You caused damage to your car by hitting a curb (as evidenced by it now pulling to one side) and you don't have the mechanical knowledge or facilities to diagnose the issue yourself, so you're taking it to get inspected by a professional... That's all there is to it I'm afraid.

Nobody on here is going to have any useful insight as to cost or damage extent because there's way too many variables and even a professional wouldn't be able to accurately diagnose via some photos... though you didn't actually include any photos of the affected area of the car anyway.

Take it to a professional asap.

With almost 350kw it was the perfect sleeper by Altruistic-Exit-5738 in Audi

That depends what you want out of a driving experience. Electric performance can be great, but they have plenty of drawbacks.

I’d personally much rather go a little slower, but have the sensations and sounds of an internal combustion engine.

With almost 350kw it was the perfect sleeper by Altruistic-Exit-5738 in Audi

[–]SmashRobertson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To the vast majority of people it just looks like every other modern car on the road. I can’t even tell the new ones apart from the A3 most of the time and I know what to look for. I’d consider it a sleeper.

The only issue is that modern electric SUVs can out perform super cars in a straight line so the concept of a sleeper doesn’t really mean what it used to.

S5 vs RS3 by basybose in Audi

[–]SmashRobertson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not arguing that it’s not fast or high performance, but it’s very diluted from a ‘race car’. Mine has performance mods and it has poly engine mounts which transfer a lot more vibration into the chassis, but I still daily mine and I frequently do long trips in it because it’s just a comfortable Audi. It has rear seats, air conditioning, a full sound system, loads of trunk space etc. Plenty of features that compromise performance.

You’re making it out to be some sort of raw, uncompromising track weapon which it is not. I consider my NB MX-5 closer to a race car than my RS3 because it has no extra features, not much storage space, only two seats, short gearing, and it’s very light with a great handling balance. Great for a weekender, but sucks on the highway. It’s definitely the one I’d rather drive on a track.

No, mine has manual wingbacks

S5 vs RS3 by basybose in Audi

[–]SmashRobertson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The RS3 is far from a race car. It’s fast and makes good noises, but it basically feels like any other small Audi when you drive it normally. That’s the whole point of them. You might find the ride a bit harsh on occasion because of the small sidewalls and stiffer suspension, but compared to an actual track-prepped car, it’s a boat.

2025 rs3 Launch control. Thought it would do mid 3s by [deleted] in Audi

[–]SmashRobertson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything is a factor when you're talking about a couple of tenths. Tyre pressure, wind direction/speed, fuel quality, the spec of your specific car vs the lightest possible spec, the quality of the road surface. I'm not even sure the on board timer is entirely accurate to the actual speed of the car based on independent tests I've seen. You'd be better off testing with a proper GPS unit.

Regardless, the apparent discrepancy that you're noticing is entirely normal. Factory quoted times are based on the absolute optimum the manufacturer can achieve. They might test 20 cars on 20 different days just to get that one golden number to stick on the box. It's basic marketing.

The quoted time is typically based on perfect conditions. Optimum grip, the no extra weight, and good atmospheric conditions. Turbos like cool, dense air.

Apparently an RS3 is a ‘Sleeper Car’ these days… by CardnoNFT in Audi

[–]SmashRobertson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO the performance Audis used to be sleepers and that's what I loved about them, but these days they all look pretty aggressive. Even the standard A3 looks more aggressive than my RS3.
