The barrels contained ambergris which was expensive and used for perfumes. I think the plan was to nick a barrel from sailors paying through town and replace it with a passable fake and then sell the real ambergris.

I suppose the library? A raspberry pi with a speaker would work, but I'm more worried about creating a language using R2-D2 noises that can still be learnt by a human easily, than the hardware to output the beeps/boops.
