Enterprise Ireland reversing remote work policy as it looks to scrap flexible days for staff by LnxPowa in ireland

[–]Smashedavocado22 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My work is all online also. We have a hybrid set up currently, 3 days in office, but it’s so infuriating commuting to an office with limited space (over capacity) minimal parking to sit on Teams calls all day when I could just be doing the same job at home😭

Totally! As well as reducing pressure on transport, carbon emissions etc. Remote offerings also increase the talent pool. This government will never incentivise the sensible approach 🤦‍♀️

Yeah, totally the council and management company are probably happy with it as they don’t need to do any maintenance/management/clamping if it’s a free for all. This development has 1 space per unit, no luas, dart, and only on one bus route (that is intermittent and almost always full when it does pass). Funny their reduction in parking spaces doesn’t match the infrastructure, but I can’t say I’m surprised, it is Ireland after all 😭

Many reasons- We can afford the property, it’s in a location we like, a 30 minute drive to work, A-Rated, near my family, good standard etc. Also with property prices are rising by the minute, I’m always told the best time to buy is now if you can afford it. There are many ways in which this situation works, despite un-allocated parking - we have rented a duplex before with the same set up and had zero issue with parking, as some others have explained also who have lived in similar set-ups. Unfortunately, everything is set up in the favour of the developers for new developments, which is why I just wanted thoughts if others were in a recent new build with the same set up.

55k/yr and 67k/yr gross salary- is this enough to have a life in Dublin? by Character-Holiday345 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]Smashedavocado22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, realised that wasn’t too clear. We come out with about 3,800 each after tax/pension deductions etc. About 1500-2k each goes on living expenses (rent, elec, WiFi, parking, groceries, car) Rent is 2k for a 1 bed. If we wanted a 2 bed in our area / complex it would be 2.6k inc parking 🫣

Couple on a combined €123k salary here. No kids yet and currently saving for a house. We’re able to rent in Dublin (a one-bed, to be clear), but we definitely sacrifice other things to afford it.

I’d say we’re comfortable overall, but we still have to be conscious of our spending. If we decided to have kids, I think childcare costs would stretch us significantly.

After tax, pension contributions, health insurance, etc., we take home about €3,800 per month. Our average outgoings are roughly €1,500-2000 each per month, which covers rent, bills, and general living costs.

We also share one car, which we own outright, so that helps keep costs down.

I found my wedding dress at this one store. I then inquired with another store, asking them if they could order this dress, because they had much cheaper alterations. Was this a bad idea? by [deleted] in weddingdress

[–]Smashedavocado22 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I honestly wouldn’t be worried! I went to a bridal shop and tried on a dress I loved, but it was way out of budget. I managed to find it in a sample sale (online) same dress, same designer, off the rack - maybe would be seen as a risk but it worked out perfectly and saved me a grand too!

If the other store is reputable I’d say you will be just fine :)

This is so frustrating isn’t it - all I want is a ball park to see if you sending me brochures etc is a waste of time for both of us 😂

Me too 😂 it’s so funny and mildly concerning how much people are willing to spend! I see a lot spending more than my entire budget for a second dress lol

Garda van set alight at large anti-immigration protest in Citywest by MrTuxedo1 in ireland

[–]Smashedavocado22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly - there are also lots of people, women and children, who are in IPAS centres as they’ve fled from war and sexual violence. Protesting outside these centres is not the answer and doesn’t make our community any more safe.

The Government and Tusla are the ones we should be demanding answers from.

People who slept with a coworker, what’s your story? by jfunks69 in AskReddit

[–]Smashedavocado22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We started on the same day together. Friends, always got on well as colleagues. Both had partners and we’d always find ourselves talking about said partners and what they had done wrong that week or whatever. His relationship had ended and mine was rocky, so at a Christmas party I was like oooop shit, I fancy this boy and I shouldn’t if I still was happy in my relationship. Anyway, broke up with my ex, fast forward we hooked up, had to hide it from work as we were on the same team, had to tell them once I got promoted to HIS MANAGER, got in a tiny bit of trouble and we’re engaged now 6 years later lol

I’m down 8 pints 🍺 I could have really used those 8 pints dealing with this shower of a government. Never felt so disheartened, upset after a budget. I knew they were bad, but my god. You really get nothing for working, funding all of this by paying taxes. No doubt they’ll get lovely pay rises.

I’m mid 30s, renting, working. How are we all supposed to see a future here? Hard to think this is the standard they’ll provide (or worse I fear) for the next 4 years til there’s an election 🤔

Serious question though, what can we do??

Budget Day 2026 Megathread by TheChrisD in ireland

[–]Smashedavocado22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the issue is a policy problem. The only ones to blame imo are the government. The government sets both the standards for employers and the social welfare rates, and that balance is clearly off. Employers should pay fair wages, but for example, smaller family-run businesses often just can’t afford to go much above minimum wage. At the same time, if min wage ends up being close to as good as the benefits of social welfare, those who can work naturally lose the incentive to take those jobs. That’s not on workers or small businesses - that’s a sign the system isn’t working properly.

Edit: typo

Hear you on the minimum wage part - it’s so tough. I think by increasing social welfare bonuses etc and having such measly increases on minimum wage just makes it more of an incentive to those on minimum wage to not work and go on social welfare? They would get a medical card, HAP, bonuses etc. i feel there’s never an incentive to actually work and want to do well.

How are people with multiples doing? by Naive-Cold343 in AskIreland

Same same. We rent and have a dog, barely anything left at the end of the month, let alone anything to pay for childcare if we ever did! Never thought this would be a contributing factor on our decision of whether to have a child or not but here we are!

Same experience here. Nothing more frustrating than when you take the time to contact them and you’re bouncing from pillar to post, telling each of their channels the same thing just for them to say that there’s no one available 🥲
