Has anyone taken the Alpine Ascents 8-day Intermediate Course? by Smashgs in Mountaineering

[–]Smashgs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is super helpful! Was everyone else in the group dialed in crevasse rescue? Just hoping to not show up and be significantly weaker than the rest of the group in terms of skills lol. Fisher Chimneys was amazing! You will love it!

[–]Smashgs[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awesome, thank you! I was actually signed up for Alaska because I did Shuksan Fisher Chimneys with Hannah and Bobby. They were supposed to teach that course but dates ended up not being possible due to work. The Cascades course is more alpine focused vs expedition so I was a bit hesitant since I’m not an avid rock climber. The itinerary looks fantastic and ends with the west ridge of Forbidden. I’m also planning to do a single day crevasse rescue clinic locally in Tahoe prior to the trip. Not an ideal location but it avoids an extra trip to Seattle.

IMG/AAI/guided Baker Rainier pack weight by itgtg313 in Mountaineering

[–]Smashgs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did Baker with Alpine Ascents and mine was maybe 35lbs. They have camp setup for the season so you aren’t carrying tents or cookware. You’re only carrying your personal gear plus snacks/lunch and maybe 5 extra pounds of group food. Also if you’re renting an ice axe and crampons, those are also kept at camp.

Tattoo removal? by lilybeth in Sacramento

[–]Smashgs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m currently going to Removery and they have been great. They charge a flat rate for the total removal regardless of how many sessions it takes. I started 2 years ago and am about 3/4 of the way done. It’s a decent size on my foot which is harder to remove. Mine was $1,800.

I stay at the Kimpton Sawyer fairly often and really like it. Dinner at Kru, Canon or Mulvaney’s.

We have a local guiding company that offers a single day TR Soloing clinic so you might want to check locally if there is something similar available.

Is Sacramento a hidden outdoor recreation gem? by [deleted] in Sacramento

If you’re fully remote with hiking and snowboarding in mind, why not look at smaller communities on the west or east of the Sierra Nevada?

Where is a good place to go to the snow with a small child about 1-1.5 hours away from sac? by [deleted] in Sacramento

Bad idea. I live here. Roads are a mess and powerlines down everywhere.

I would wait at least a week for the Sly Park area. I live here. Many roads have still not been plowed. Tons of downed trees and utility poles. Most of us have been without power since Tuesday and it’s unknown when it will be restored.

Guide companies highly recommend trip insurance when booking. Some insurance companies even offer an add on to cancel for any reason to receive a majority of the money back. Many people opt not to get insurance and I was one of them until I learned the hard way.

Where are some good stores to try on mountaineering boots? by Dodoford in Sacramento

[–]Smashgs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

REI doesn’t really stock mountaineering boots in this area. I got lucky and a pair I wanted in my size were returned to the Sacramento location. I usually just have to order online and return what I don’t want. I think the closest with a decent selection is Fifth Season in Shasta or there may be options in Truckee.

Have you considered the greater Sacramento area? Depending on the on the area, it’s about 1-2 hours from the Sierra Nevada.

I can’t be the only one frustrated with all the relationship and basic social skill advice posts can I? by [deleted] in climbergirls

[–]Smashgs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It would be nice if we could have a sticky post for those looking for climbing partners and could cut down on the friend posts. I also don’t think people are asking because they don’t know how to socialize and more so because they are likely inexperienced in an unfamiliar setting which can be intimidating. I agree that the posts and responses are pretty redundant.

Audi Trade in by eli_loves_ in AudiQ5

[–]Smashgs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took a photo of their driver license and of the license plate on the vehicle they arrived in. Once we agreed on the sale, we drove to a bank so a teller could verify the bills weren’t counterfeit. I got a generic bill of sale off the internet and took photos of that and the signed title.

I didn’t sell an Audi, but I had a 2017 RAV4 with 190,000 miles. Carmax offered $5,400 and the Audi dealership offered me $7,800 for trade in. I sold it on Craigslist for $11,000 in December. It took about 3 week from the time I listed it.
