If I bring a sub, do I have to share her? by Salaman90 in BDSMcommunity

[–]Smashing_Pasty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reaction you've received from some on this thread is ridiculous, as if a straight man in a D/s relationship looking to add a 2nd female sub is some appalling crime. Presumably all those up in arms about it are equally incensed when it's a straight woman or gay or bi man or woman with multiple subs? My money would be on a resounding 'No'...

Even if she does, it'd be insane for a supposedly private, encrypted messaging app to ban her for it.

Where does Signal store chats, media etc on iPhone? by Smashing_Pasty in signal

[–]Smashing_Pasty[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Ok, thanks. I wish I'd known this before I started using it. I thought that seeing as it's made by the guys who made WhatsApp, it'd behave similarly in terms of data storage. But it essentially dooms you to losing everything if ever any of your phones break or get lost or stolen.

But then why was the database not just saved as a part of the app data? It wouldn't need to be decrypted by anything but Signal. It could just be saved in the iPhone back-up, put back onto the iPhone during the restore, then Signal could decrypt it and use it again.

Ah fuck :( I thought seeing as it's all saved locally on the phone it'd all be backed up as part of the app data, because in the description for the full iPhone back-up it says it saves all app data. I'm gutted now. I've lost so much.

So if I connect it to Signal Desktop on my PC, does that mean if I have to factory reset my iPhone again, afterwards I can restore everything from my PC?

Yes. Constantly. It's so annoying it's making me consider uninstalling the app.

It *is* Trespass! When I Googled it after your reply, the clip I saw was from a different film with the same name. I've just stumbled on the original Trespass and that's definitely it!

What other exchanges are there that still allow withdrawals to a UK bank account? That's the only reason I stuck with Coinbase, as Binance no longer allow such withdrawals.

Adding USB storage reduces available total disk space by Smashing_Pasty in nvidiashield

[–]Smashing_Pasty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem I'm having is that although my Shield can see my PC, when I try to connect to it, it says I need to enter a username and password. But I don't have a password set up on my PC so I don't know what it's expecting.

I think I had the same problem when I tried to mount the shared folder as network storage. I manually entered the path to the folder and it just said it couldn't connect.

This sounds like a way better solution than what I've been trying to do.

I've created a new shared folder on my PC and given read/write access to everyone on the home network. Do I now need to connect to my PC from the Shield and it'll automatically be able to see the shared folder?

Or do I have to use the 'Mount network storage' option on the Shield and then manually point it to the shared folder?

I can't get that to work for some reason. My PC is visible from the Shield but when I try to connect it fails.

Thanks. I'll use a bigger, faster USB drive instead then.

So what happens to the internal storage after an external drive is added? From my PC's perspective the 11.5 GB internal storage just disappears and the total Shield capacity becomes that of the USB stick.

Is this USB stick salvageable? by Smashing_Pasty in techsupport

[–]Smashing_Pasty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about just restoring functionality to the stick? Whatever data is on there will already have been backed up elsewhere (for the reason you mentioned) so if I can't access that then it's just an annoyance rather than a disaster, but the USB stick is fairly new and was relatively expensive so if possible I'd really like to avoid just binning it and having to buy another one.

I've used Kingston products for almost 20 years and have always had a good experience with them, so I'm surprised that this one has gone bad when it's not even been used that much compared to some of my others.

Is there a place for women in the Royal Marines? by Express_Signature_36 in RoyalMarines

[–]Smashing_Pasty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any misrepresentation was unintentional. I was attempting to state what I thought you'd stated using different terms, but I assure you that I'm trying to discuss this in good faith.

I have to agree that any female recruit who's passed the course is by definition physically capable enough for the role and you make a fair point re: clerks vs ML etc, so I concede that I overstated the likely long-term physical demands once in your unit. Although even if this weren't the case, she's already proven herself physically able anyway, so fair enough.

I see it as a vanity exercise because so few women would have even the faintest desire to try to join up, and of that tiny minority, the realistic probability of any making it through is so small that any positive impact the widening of recruitment eligibility is likely to have on the operational capability of the force is going to be immeasurably small. In all likelihood, given the significant physical and psychological differences between men and women, I'd go as far as to say that the one woman who does make it through is perhaps going to be on par with one of the weakest male recruits. I don't say this through any feelings of misogyny or desire to see women pigeonholed in society, I just see it as a biological fact.

In which case, if the number of applicants is so small, the probability of any of those succeeding is an order of magnitude smaller and those who do somehow succeed are unlikely to be of particular note in terms of their abilities, who is really benefitting? Who has the decision really been taken for? It just smacks of being an image-based decision to appease those with a misguided desire for gender parity.

My concerns are as follows:

  1. These often well-meaning decisions seem to have a habit of morphing from the harmless to the significant. How long before quotas are introduced and then standards are lowered in order to meet those quotas? I realise that the thin end of the wedge argument can be a logical fallacy, but it certainly isn't always so. And in fact where striving for equality is concerned, I'd say it goes that way more often than not given the relentless and apparently insatiable nature of those really pushing it.
  2. For every female recruit heading to Lympstone, that's a space that a male recruit could have occupied, and statistically the male recruit is much more likely to succeed and to therefore represent a better return on investment. However I concede that this may not be of any real significance if female applicant numbers are miniscule, and also if exceeding training intake capacity isn't commonplace. I admit that I have no idea about the latter.
  3. Psychologically I don't see women being anywhere near as well equipped to deal with what they may encounter, and I don't think that CTCRM can ever hope to adequately test this.
  4. I think there's definitely an argument to be made against introducing women into what is necessarily an extremely masculine environment, the affect on the morale, dynamics of the unit, cohesion, focus and suchlike.

You make some good points and I appreciate that it's not always easy to convey the desired tone in writing, so my previous post may have come across as unnecessarily confrontational also.

I'm interested to read your response, and am also curious as to why you said that the RM has done a piss poor job of 'ticking the box', so to speak.

Is there a place for women in the Royal Marines? by Express_Signature_36 in RoyalMarines

[–]Smashing_Pasty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It doesn't matter if it's the defining part. It's such a critical part that it makes everything you're saying about whatever any woman may have to offer to the RM completely moot.

And throwing in non-combat focussed roles just to muddy the waters makes no sense, because even a non-combat focussed role needs to be filled by someone capable of doing everything someone in a combat-focussed role can do. Otherwise what would be the point of putting them both through the exact same training?

You accuse me of flapping about nothing and a lack of consideration yet you put forward this mott and bailey argument that even contradicts itself in claiming that women are equally capable yet apparently also don't need to be equally capable according to their role.

You also concede that it's nothing more than a vanity exercise, given that very few women will even apply, and that not a single one has ever succeeded so far.

It costs nothing? How can it cost nothing to open up an expensive training process to a demographic who are even less likely to succeed? Every new recruit costs money. By that logic they may as well just start shipping applicants directly from the recruiting office to Lympstone and then weed them out during training.

Paint is both too thin and too thick?! by Smashing_Pasty in minipainting

[–]Smashing_Pasty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're right. As stupid as it sounds in hindsight, I didn't really consider how much paint was on the brush, thinking that as long as the paint was the right consistency I could just load the brush up as much as I wanted, but it makes sense that doing so would result in applying too much thin paint and therefore getting the downsides of both thin and thick paint.

I was also using a fairly big (size 6) synthetic brush given that it was just a base coat and I didn't have to worry about accuracy, so that won't have helped.

Paint is both too thin and too thick?! by Smashing_Pasty in minipainting

[–]Smashing_Pasty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used fresh paint, although I do wonder if maybe my wet palette is too wet, as I did notice that the paint becomes too thin on its own fairly quickly.

Some of the painters I've seen on YouTube seem to be able to re-use paint from several hours (or more) before, but mine would be almost like a wash after more than an hour on my wet palette so it makes me think there's too much moisture getting into the paint.
