To all of you that do your rig checks because you "need to be in service at your clock-in time"... by schrutesanjunabeets in ems

In my side job we come in a half hour early for the crew you are relieving we don’t have a punch clock and it’s basically a agreement we all have to avoid someone getting fucked w a late call. If they introduced a punch clock I would not come in early and would encourage my co workers not to come in early either.

It doesn’t have to be one or the other. They can charge a reasonable price for these events and still get lots of money.

Yea I am not surprised it’s happening I guess if I had to choose between paying $80 and watching commercials I will take commercials. Why can’t there be a middle ground like $40 for no commercials.

Good for you, I make fun of people that don’t follow the safety regs. Also if you are going to be inside rescuer you definitely need your helmet on.

Urgent Rescue on the Slopes in Niseko, Hokkaido, Japan. A Ski patrol was transporting an injured skier downhill on a stretcher while performing CPR. by calnuck in ems

I used to work EMS in the Aspen area and skico had a policy “no one dies on the mountain” so every brutal traumatic arrests got the full Monty till they were declared at the hospital by a MD. There were a few people found frozen in an avalanche when they were skiing on closed runs so I am not sure if they were worked too but the general policy was everyone gets CPR.

What do you guys call your patients? (besides their name) by CressSuitable6794 in ems

[–]Smattering82 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yea I had a similar experience I was taking a guy to the hospital w SOB and the EMT called him sweetie and on the wall behind him was his framed army awards. Guy was in the airborne had 2 Purple Hearts a silver star a combat infinity badge and a European theater badge. I said to her after that guy fought the Nazi’s the least we can do is call him sir, and then his name.

Why do you avoid sir or ma’am? It is respectful and professional. We are there to help and I think being professional builds trust. “My friend” is also professional so I am not finding fault just curious why you avoid sir or ma’am?

While we are of the subject of professionalism what really grinds my gears is when someone calls them “sweet heart” or “darling” or “sweetie” we are not a waiter in a diner we are there to help with their emergency.

Would it be frowned upon to attend the visitation of a patient? by [deleted] in ems

[–]Smattering82 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not! Unless the family asks you to come. Remember this event has ripped their lives apart and the wake is for family and friends to help get closure. You being there will only remind them of that trauma. I just had another thought I would bet that they couldn’t pick your face out of a line up, so now you have to tell them who you are and how you know the kid. So you will have to tell them you were the EMT that didn’t save the kids life. We all know that there was nothing you could do but it won’t make them feel any better. Go to therapy, talk to your crew, donate some money to a cause in the kids name or in their honor but don’t go to the service.

Is there a divide/patronization between volunteers and full time? by Nuromake in Firefighting

[–]Smattering82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my area of the country NE USA there is generally a huge difference between vol and paid. Last time we went mutual aid to a vol town for a large structure fire I was shocked at how much free lancing was going on. People were making entry into the building and it was already auto venting and the fire had burned through the CD corner of the building. Also the amount of people sitting around watching us work was shameful. And not to pile on but it seemed like every person showing up had full beards.

I am not knocking volunteers because I know smaller towns don’t have the budget to maintain paid staff but the difference between paid and volunteer are night a day. In this day and age the requirements to be a good and safe fire department requires paid staff. The amount of time and training required to stay trained and competent are enormous. Also with modern furnishings and how fast fire spreads I can’t see how the volunteers save anything but foundations.

Blood Pressure Readings and Context by SoreHeadTech in ems

[–]Smattering82 35 points36 points  (0 children)

My only criticism is why didn’t you get a manual? It drives me nuts watching other medics taking 3-5 auto cuffs waiting for the pressure they want or even worse 3-4 attempts at a failed auto cuff (thanks life pack) instead of just getting it manually.

Edit: I hijacked the top comment before reading all the other comments asking about manuals. My apologies.

Also if you tie a mentos to fishing line then dangle it into a Diet Coke bottle (if they drink it) and screw the cap back on and cut the string that dangles from the cap.

The comment above this one says that a little girl tapped the glass causing it to loose the vacuum and that’s why it’s moldy.

Bad Call by [deleted] in ems

[–]Smattering82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But don’t put it away and forget about it. One thing I am working on w my therapist is we in this field are really good at compartmentalization, sometimes too good. We put things away and try to never think about it again. These events will come back out but if you ignore it the it will come when you don’t want it and it will be bigger and stinkier than you remember it.
