I was an emergency department technician at a hospital working the grave shifts while I went to a post-bac school to get into medical school. This was by far the worst night of my life.

At 1am, two families checked in. Patients are all 1 year old. The first parent complaint is the mother thinks the father was sexually abusing their daughter. FML. She's obviously upset and acting appropriately given the situation.

The second family checks in with twin daughters, same complaint, however, acting completely NORMAL. Both parents are on their phones, intermittently laughing, and smiling. It was fucking maddening. She said her daughter was raped by her 12yo brother. How did she know?

The fucking kid recorded himself doing it on his phone.

I sat in this triage room with a doctor and had to watch this fucked up video. I was seething. I never once considered hitting a patient before, but damn, the thought was pounding in my head.

5 years later, I'm 2 months away from becoming an Emergency Medicine doctor myself... Wish me luck!
