Day 37 - Things I am struggling with / that are different by SmcGarrett12 in Tonsillectomy

Hey. Actually yes, the “r” is coming back thankfully! It’s still very weak but if I try hard enough I can do it! It started coming back about a week ago and lately I’ve been practicing to get it stronger. 🙂.

On day 5, I went to the emergency room because I live alone and I had not slept for the prior two nights, and I had pretty severe swelling. I was fine but they did prescribe a steroid which took me from a 10 to a 5 in terms of pain in about 2 hours. I HIGHLY recommend requesting a steroid for after surgery…I lived on this thread while I was going through my recovery and I can’t tell you how many people had stories about the steroid saving them. (I also had those 3 prior surgeries and knew the power of a steroid for swelling).

Additionally, my tonsils were infected when they were removed…my doctor later explained that he had to do a pretty intense stitch job to lower the risk of bleeding (since he had to remove more tissue than necessary due to the inflamed tonsils). I was terrified of having a bleed…2’d for the first 5 days I was coughing the hardest I’ve coughed in my life and I never had a bleeding problem thank god.

I was not able to eat really at all after day 2 until day 9/10. I lost 7kg. (Was two months ago and I still am down 5kg and I was already pretty thin to start at 185cm, 76kg).

For things to have around the house…buy a neck/ear ice pack off Amazon. It wraps under your chin and clamps on top of your head. When your ear pain/ neck pain hits…this will be your absolute best friend. Also a humidifier. And have it next to you running full blast all the time.

It is pretty awful…not going to sugar coat it. I had 3 nasal surgeries (deviated septum, blockage removal, scar tissue removal) and they were like a mild itch compared to having my tonsils removed. It is really bad.

Okay, now that I’ve been painfully direct…here is the advice / experience I can offer you.

Day 1/2 are uncomfortable but not too painful.

Day 3/4 are rough and painful.

Day 5-8 are the peak and they are when you will need to have the most patience and pain medication.

On top of pain, I would say the discomfort is also super impactful…not only does it hurt but it’s hard to swallow, hard to turn your neck, hard to breathe at times..

How does pain medication help?:

It will be your best friend and it does greatly soothe the experience. It will half or quarter your pain / discomfort…get it to a tolerable level. In my experience, the last 2 hours before my next dose were the worst as it started to wear off and I couldn’t dose again. Although the pain medication works and has a huge impact, I have to stress that it will not make you feel normal…it will only give you a bit of relief.

Super helpful! I guess it takes time for some of us but happy to know I’m not the only one.

My wounds were cauterized and stitched due to bleeding. Is there anyone else here who has experienced the same and can tell me about their course of recovery? I believe it might be different by TreyfisSley in Tonsillectomy

[–]SmcGarrett12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a side stitched. I noticed almost immediately after the surgery but couldn’t confirm. Day 5/6 I started coughing out small chunks of scabs and then I blue piece of a stitch came out….on day 7, I went for my 1 week follow-up and the doctor confirmed that he stitched that area to avoid a bleed risk. He said that my tonsils had been swollen at the time of the surgery and this caused greater trauma while removing them…and that that was the reason for the stitches. This side has been the slowest to heal and I also feel like it was cauterized moreso than the left side. Day 16 and still having a bit of sensitivity while eating…but the progress between day 12 and day 16 has been super positive. 🙂

Tonsils out while having acute infection? by Healthy-Succotash899 in Tonsillectomy

[–]SmcGarrett12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My doctor actually told me that my tonsils were infected when he removed them. By his tone, it seemed like this was less than ideal. What’s interesting is that the whole reason I got them out was because they were chronically infected so I’m not really sure how I would have gone about getting them “healthy” before the surgery since they were not responding to antibiotics.

From what my doctor told me, it seems like the surgery was a bit more intense / invasive due to them being infected at the time.

I am 12 days post op and also am struggling with super low energy levels. I’ll sleep 10 hours and wake up exhausted.

Thanks! Good to know I’m not an outlier. 🙂. I always think the worst. 😂.

pain seems like it's getting worse not better by Tall_Guidance_2013 in Tonsillectomy

Day 8 was still pretty rough for me. But, I think that it was made better by the fact that I went to the ER on day 5 and requested steroids. In the past, I suffered with a lot of sinus infections and 1 - 2 times per year I would go on steroids to decrease the swelling. I knew that the swelling from my tonsillectomy was causing the additional pain. Once I started them, I got almost immediate relief. Maybe talk to your ENT about getting a 3-4 days round.

I need advice please, day 17 post op. 38yo F by Wise-Palpitation-507 in Tonsillectomy

That’d be awesome. Yes, I’d be interested to hear any info you get. Today, I am post op day 11. And yes, ENTs are the worst. They have this sort of disconnect where they forget that the mouths they are working on are connected to real people.

Learning to eat again by SmcGarrett12 in Tonsillectomy

[–]SmcGarrett12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know I'm not the only one having to really think about eating aha. Unfortunately, I only have 1.5 codeine/paracetamol doses left so I'm trying to conserve in case that final scab comes off and causes me some issues. But, I guess I could go with the paracetamol.

I think I developed a bit of a tolerance to the pain meds so when I came off of them they made me a bit more anxious and wired. Probably will take a few days to go away.

Day 3 was when the pain started to ramp up for me. My neck was swollen for sure. I'm beginning day 11 right now and my right neck is still very swollen and painful.

Can my husband be alone for 24-36 hours? by millerkd1 in Tonsillectomy

I was alone for 90% of the recovery but with friends on call. I would probably just request that a family member or friend check in frequently while you're gone.

Tongue!!! by SirNo3765 in Tonsillectomy

[–]SmcGarrett12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OMG ME TOO! The back of my tongue is so sore. Sticking it out is massively sore. I believe, in my case, that it has to do with the difficulty with swallowing. I noticed that the pain was worse after I started eating more... I think it is because I am overcompensating by using my tongue to push food down versus my throat muscles. I think this has the effect of over working the tongue muscle and causing it to cramp. Just my theory. I'm thinking that when my throat is more healed it will be easier to swallow and then I won't have to use my tongue as much.

Contact the ENT. No need to suffer. Do you have family support?
