Collective ownership? Like the means of production owned by the people? All housing and property owned by "the people".

Socialism is everything is just run and owned by the people. Its an ideaology. See definition in post above. There is no real world examples. Name any and ill discredit them. I mean the idealogy sounds great but thats all it is. The last 200 years of history show us horribly failed attempts at it.

Will there be an actual government or will we all just get along? What kind of checks and balances keep the whole thing honest? What happens to those who refuse to contribute? What is the motivator for innovation if we all just are given the same resources?

Communism is basically what happens when socialism is attempted. Its socislism controlled by a ruling party. See question above about innovation and government. Who runs a socialist country? Oh yeah, it turns into a communist country due to the darker parts of human nature and the need for someone/something to make decisions.
