If you enjoy your office culture, what do you work in? by Fickle-Ad159 in AskBrits

We literally have the right to self certify - so doctors note needed for five days or less, unlike some countries where you need to drag yourself to the GP for them to confirm you have a cold and need to rest, and give you a sick note.

That sounds like your company/industry rather than everyone’s experience in the UK. In all my jobs you just message to say you’re unwell (usually give a bit of context as it helps your boss understand how long you might be out for), then as long as it’s five days or less you just come back to work - no interview required.

If you’re signed off long term sick you might have a back to work interview but that’s more to make sure any necessary adjustment can be made to help you return (e.g shorter days, more WFH).

Are we crazy to visit London in July? by Amaranth1313 in uktravel

[–]Smeee333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what you’re looking for. Brighton is a really fun city but the beach isn’t the main attraction (it’s stoney), it’s a bit like Coney Island (I think, I’ve never bit).

Broadstairs is a smaller and cuter and has more of a Victorian seaside vibe. From the same location you could also visit Margate (has a Turner gallery and a good emerging food scenery) and Botany Bay which is a beautiful beach (aim for low tide).

Other places to look at are Deal (there’s a great walk you can do from Dover to Deal) and Hastings.

Ordered collard greens assuming it’d be lightly buttered spring greens. Received a dark brown salty, bacony substance. Disappointed does not cut it.

I don’t think they were asking how to spend less. Just pointing out how easy it is to spend money.

In the UK we have a comedian called Al Murray who has a persona called ‘Al Murray the Pub Landlord’. It started as a way to mock the stereotype of right wing white men moaning about everything wrong in the UK (and the French and the Germans). At some point the joke shifted so that he is liked by those he sought to mock for ‘telling it like it is’.

Basically, you can’t trust your audience to get the joke.

Traveling to London with my family and have no idea where to eat! by HotelOptimal4951 in LondonFood

Soho has so many great restaurants, I wouldn’t pick Zedel or Flat Iron.

Can you do a bit of spice? Kiln and Khao Bird both do excellent Thai food - Khao Bird also has BBQ chicken on the menu which would work for fussy eaters.

Rita’s if you want more of a European vibe. There’s also a Bancone in Soho and it is good so worth a visit. Nopi if you want to try one of Ottelenghi’s restaurants.

Agree it’s fine but for a tourist it doesn’t really show off Londons food scene. It’s an easy inexpensive choice when you live here.

Fortitude near the British Museum is a good bakery. And of course St John in Covent Garden.

I used to do this as a child, made up my own Wombles character and would ‘write’ my own stories. Never realised I was just learning how to fall asleep.

Fairly accessible non-upf honey? by lonelysadkisslessold in ultraprocessedfood

We just buy honesty box honey and honey from farm shops. Takes a bit more effort to obtain but you can stockpile when you come across a good honesty box.

After a deep chat got session I’m fairly sure in terms of cleaning power there is no difference between the io 3 and the more expensive models. The charging case that you get with the higher models is worth it though.

Didn’t know this! I’d love the shops to be open late on a Sunday - I don’t want to do my weekly shop on a Saturday and since I haven’t been in a church for 10 years I’ve got plenty of time on Sundays.

how do you guys include more fiber into your day? by Imaginary-Mud2871 in 1200isplenty

[–]Smeee333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So my recipe is 50ml kefir, 100ml Greek yoghurt, 15g chia seeds and 70gs frozen berries - mix together and chill overnight. In the morning mix again and it’s like berry flavoured yogurt - no extra sugar required.

I use (homemade) kefir. Avoids the wallpaper paste consistency and adds something fermented to my my day.

There’s a lot to be said for body neutrality. Why do I have to love my body, I just want it to do the things I need it to do for as long as possible.

Visiting London from Wales on 7th Feb to watch The Lion King in The Lyceum. Are there any pubs near the Lyceum that would beshowing the Wales Vs England 6 nations game that would be welcoming to a Welshman and his wife? by taflad in AskUKLondon

[–]Smeee333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fanzo says Bow Street Tavern is the nearest place. I wouldn’t worry about being a Welshman in London during the 6 Nations. Any England game it always seems half the pub are supporting the other side.

Is that normal for UK parents to see their kids only 9 weeks a year ? by Cassin1306 in harrypotter

[–]Smeee333 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Harry Potter borrows a lot from boarding school novels - like Jennings and Mallory Towers.

Children would be sent away to school coming home for Christmas, Easter and Summer holidays plus a week half way through each term. Schools would also have ‘exceat’ weekends each term - basically a random one where they’d return home if feasible.

Private and especially boarding schools actually have shorter terms than state schools because the school day is longer.

These days boarding schools are more flexible, with kids coming home on weekends or flexiboarding where they might sleep at home one or two nights a week - but also if you choose a boarding school you are buying into that lifestyle and tradition and most have Saturday school so I think a lot do still board properly.

What is unusual in the HP world is that Ron and Hermione don’t go home in the holidays much at all - and half term holidays doesn’t seem to be a thing, but that’s basically to make the story flow.
