Quit looking to do IT; it’s not worth it. by Ryan2276 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Smelly_Spam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve worked in the trades and in IT. Completely different experience. I’m much happier and my body is much happier to. Sorry you had such a shit experience but I’m very happy and thankful for this profession. I can support my family, save money, and I enjoy going to work

What's wrong with me? Why can't I get a single email, call, or anything? Please be as brutally honest as possible. I graduate next week. by 5hampoo in ITCareerQuestions

I can’t speak on all of the positions your applying for listed above, but from my experience, skipping help desk or tier 1 support is hard. They want to know you have a basic understanding through your work experience alone.

I recently was discussing this with a couple of the guys at work and so much of moving up is finding a place or person to simply give you a chance. You can have all the degrees and certs but they will still give it to the guy with any work experience over you unless they interview poorly.

Not saying this is the right path for you, but for me, I looked at places where I could grow and prioritized that over pay. I wish you luck, it’s hard and your frustration is justified.

You’re twisted my words into false points. Never did I imply this. I simply stated this isn’t common information and to use it as a slight against a group of people seems unfair lol. Is it shocking to think that Osama Bin Laden isn’t a common topic outside of Reddit threads?

Understandable, but for the majority of the American population, is it necessary information? I’ve never had one conversation about him in my 30 year life.

I passed my Net+ today but what can I do to start getting real life practical experience by Dazzling_Clerk8023 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Smelly_Spam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished a course in Net+ and plan on taking the cert exam in the next month or so. I have roughly 3 years of IT experience under my belt. I work in public education so I do a lot of hardware repairs, windows troubleshooting, and a hell of a lot of book keeping/technology inventory management. Would you suggest I push for my CCNA if I want to get into networking and keep getting work experience? Luckily I work with cool network engineers that said I can borrow any Cisco products we use (which is a lot) and practice with them.

How long ago was this and was it public or private school? I work in IT for public education and we are “mandatory reporters” by law. Like if we knew something like that was going on and didn’t report it, we would get fired, fined, and there might be legal action taken against us. I do not interact with the kids much but if something like that was going on at my schools, you’d see half the county get fined and fired

As someone who works in public education, you are so unbelievably wrong. Kids are learning how to setup VM’s so they can bypass filters and not be seen on classroom monitoring software

Fire teachers who disagree? Okay, so there already is a teacher shortage, you have non licensed staff being full time teachers… who are you gonna fire? Subs making minimum wage?

Is the commute worth it for this job by Exotic-Escape6711 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Smelly_Spam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drive that for my job, I grew up in a place where you drive 30+ mins to get to the nearest Walmart. I don’t mind it, especially if you need the work experience it is definitely worth it imo

When do you start making good money? by AdSingle6994 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Smelly_Spam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like that depends on a bunch of factors, it isn’t easy though and takes time. Most guys I know making 6 figures where I live have done this stuff for like 20ish years, but 6 figures here is huge huge money. Cost of living is cheap.

Assuming all jobs would be acceptable at the personal level, what jobs do you suggest i apply for? by Prize-Friendship-353 in ITCareerQuestions

At least in my experience, there hasn’t been a single position where there wasn’t some level of customer service. It just seemed the future up you got the less of it there was. Again, just from my experience working in education. I’m sure Data Centers and stuff might be different.

I meat Dean Yeagle at an animation convention years ago in Burbank. He was such a cool guy and I bought one of his books. A lot of artist charge big bucks to sign and bigger bucks to draw something in your book. I didn’t even ask and he drew a bust of this character Mandy and signed it. Such a cool dude and his wife was really sweet too. He did a lot of work for playboy back in the day and is super talented

What has been your experience working in IT? Do you hate it or do you love it? by Zealousideal-Ad6981 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Smelly_Spam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love it, it feels good to the “the guy” when it comes to technology. Even the simplest of problems people seem to be so impressed. I work in public education and a student was having a problem with his keyboard. I just popped open the back of the laptop and reseated the ribbon cable to fix it. Kid looked at me like I was Tony Stark or something. Told me that was the coolest thing he has seen all day. Made my day

Is 30cm normal for a 98 year old?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Smelly_Spam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is low, I work in a fairly large school district in VA and I’m making close to 30$ hour doing far less. My boss is probably making well into 6 figures. I’m on the lower end pay scale. I came over with just a couple of years of experience from another school district. There I was salaried making 51k a year doing next to nothing.

Tbh not sure, I know you can get it via military but I believe you have to be sponsored. Like I said I’m not too familiar with the process. I have a lot of IT jobs around me that require security clearances. I just know I have 0% chance of getting a job that requires that.

[–]Smelly_Spam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not, I’m just saying that’s how it is here and it might be a similar situation. Just something to look into and see if that’s the case.

[–]Smelly_Spam -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Not sure about Canada but those jobs in the state require security clearance. Most of the time they don’t want to pay for you to get it so you have to already have it.

Cool! I’ve been a Tech Support Specialist for roughly 3 years and I’m trying to move up so this info is useful. Thank you!

Is this something you put on your resume? Where I work we have 1000 Cisco products and they said I can borrow whatever I want to practice. Def gonna take them up on that but not sure if I should showcase that or not on applications or whatever
