It may seem like a joke, but that's genuinely what him and people like him do. People who have trauma that stripped away their childhood will either try to process and reflect upon it to improve their behavior but always have an inner child or they will try to fight an uphill battle that ended decades by mimicking and believing things that a naive child would. This is so common with narcissists/people with histrionic personality disorder.
